Activity-based safety system

Figures 9-5 and 9-6 provide an overview of an activity-based safety system that will be successful if implemented properly. It allows the supervisor to choose selected topics for discussion with their employees. I have seen this type of system develop a successful culture, because it puts the supervisor in tune with the employees.

Recognize employees. This is similar to an activity-based safety system. This system encourages employees to continue to use safe operating practices. 

Reviewing documentation of specific activities (safety committees, business contracts, activity-based safety system, behavior-based safety, etc.)... 

One of the techniques that we will be discussing is the use of the activity-based safety process, as described in Chapter 11, Developing an Activity-Based Safety System . We will discuss the use of the preshift meeting to set the tone for each workday as well as other techniques designed to directly shift, the perception of safety at the interface between the worker and the hazard. 

Connection between nodes is a link. Your connection to other people is a link. For example, when you talk to another person you link with them. When you as part of the leadership team have a face-to-face discussion, hold a daily preshift review, a weekly or monthly meeting, area walk-throughs, and/or review the equipment/machine-specific checklist with your employees, you are directly linked with your employee(s). Refer to Chapter 11, Developing an Activity-Based Safety System. Through your links, your message is directly communicated to the employees in each of these activities. Where you are not directly connected is where information may not be flowing. In addition, the employees you are linked with are in turn linked to other employees. 

Your coordination and influence with the person writing and developing joh descriptions is crucial. As we discussed in Chapter 3, Analyzing and Using Your Network , the network analysis can assist you in determining the actions you must take to get safety criteria built in to the process. In addition, we will discuss activity-based safety systems in more detail in Chapter 11, Developing an Activity-Based Safety System . 

Begin the implementation starting with the education, training, and communication of the SMS and its importance to all employees. This phase represents a transition from the past efforts to a new process and its procedures. The implementation must first ensure that all employees are on board with the desired changes. Using the activity-based safety system. Chapter 11, Developing an Activity-Based Safety System , quickly spreads the information about the SMS and how all employees will be involved. 

Achieving safety excellence begins with leadership commitment. This statement tends to be overused. However, while this statement is overused, it is vital for the leadership team to show their commitment to the safety process as they must demonstrate visible positive involvement in daily safety activities. Refer to Chapter 11, Developing an Activity-Based Safety System for more details on defined safety activities.

To have a successful safety culture, all elements of the organizations must work together and every employee in the organization must be held accountable for their role in sustaining the process. A connection must exist between what and how a role is to be held accountable and the end results desired. The responsibilities must be based on preloss activities as discussed in Qiapter 11, Developing an Activity-Based Safety System . 

By focusing on activities within the control of specific roles, accountability becomes a valid leadership tool. For example, the use of activity-based safety as discussed in Chapter 11, Developing an Activity-Based Safety System , provides a method of straightforward preloss activities that can be readily implemented. 

Through these discussions, your message is directly communicated to the employees for each of these activities. Refer to Chapter 11, for more details on Developing an Activity-Based Safety System . 

In Chapter 11 we will discuss the activity-based safety system (ABSS) that establishes basic activities that are performed at a specific time and place. The objective of ABSS is to quickly extend the influence of the safety management system throughout the entire organization to enhance and in turn strengthen the safety culture. 

If implemented correctly, the activity-based safety system (ABSS) will not be the program of the month but rather a continuous routine that is consistently followed. 

If the activity-based safety system (ABSS) is used, supervisors/team leaders become mentors/ coaches who will reinforce safety-related information after training sessions are completed. 

ABSS (Activity-Based Safety System) Specific activities performed on a routine basis as part of the safety management system. 

These concepts can be addressed through a safety system such as the activity-based safety system (ABSS), one-on-one contacts, preshift safety meetings, etc (Roughton Crutchfield, 2013). Refer to Chapter 11 for a detailed discussion of how this concept work.
