The detector setup consists of four 256 x 256 pixel amorphous silicon technology sensor flat panels with 0.75 x 0.75 mm pixel size, having an active area of 192 x 192 mm [5j. These sensors are radiation sensitive up to 25 MeV and therefor well suited for detecting the LINAC radiation. The four devices are mounted onto a steel Irame each having the distance of one active area size from the other. Cyanoacrylate adhesives (Super-Glues) are materials which rapidly polymerize at room temperature. The standard monomer for a cyanoacrylate adhesive is ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate [7085-85-0], which readily undergoes anionic polymerization. Very rapid cure of these materials has made them widely used in the electronics industry for speaker magnet mounting, as weU as for wire tacking and other apphcations requiring rapid assembly. Anionic polymerization of a cyanoacrylate adhesive is normally initiated by water. Therefore, atmospheric humidity or the surface moisture content must be at a certain level for polymerization to take place. These adhesives are not cross-linked as are the surface-activated acryhcs. Rather, the cyanoacrylate material is a thermoplastic, and thus, the adhesives typically have poor temperature resistance. [Pg.233]

The active immunotherapeutic approach is specific and based on the premise that tumor antigens are immunogenic and the host is sufficientiy immunocompetent to mount an effective immune response to an autologous tumor. Theoretically, a weak or suppressed host immune system that had allowed the formation of a tumor may be overridden by active immunization or immunostimulation. Radioactivity in environmental waters can originate from both natural and artificial sources. The natural or background radioactivity usuaUy amounts to <100 mBq/L. The development of the nuclear power industry as weU as other industrial and medical uses of radioisotopes (qv) necessitates the deterrnination of gross alpha and beta activity of some water samples. These measurements are relatively inexpensive and are useful for screening samples. The gross alpha or beta activity of an acidified sample is deterrnined after an appropriate volume is evaporated to near dryness, transferred to a flat sample-mounting dish, and evaporated to dryness in an oven at 103—105°C. The amount of original sample taken depends on the amount of residue needed to provide measurable alpha or beta activity. [Pg.233]

Gas turbine fuels can contain natural surfactants if the cmde fraction is high in organic acids, eg, naphthenic (cycloparaffinic) acids of 200—400 mol wt. These acids readily form salts that are water-soluble and surface-active. Older treating processes for sulfur removal can leave sulfonate residues which are even more powerful surfactants. Refineries have installed processes for surfactant removal. Clay beds to adsorb these trace materials are widely used, and salt towers to reduce water levels also remove water-soluble surfactants. In the field, clay filters designed as cartridges mounted in vertical vessels are also used extensively to remove surfactants picked up in fuel pipelines, in contaminated tankers, or in barges. [Pg.411]

Another means to remove the water of esterification is calcium carbide supported in a thimble of a continuous extractor through which the condensed vapor from the esterification mixture is percolated (41) (see Carbides). The lime is mixed with water and volcanic ash and used to bond stone, brick, or even wood.
