Cyanoacrylate adhesives (Super-Glues) are materials which rapidly polymerize at room temperature. The standard monomer for a cyanoacrylate adhesive is ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate [7085-85-0], which readily undergoes anionic polymerization. Very rapid cure of these materials has made them widely used in the electronics industry for speaker magnet mounting, as weU as for wire tacking and other apphcations requiring rapid assembly. Anionic polymerization of a cyanoacrylate adhesive is normally initiated by water. Therefore, atmospheric humidity or the surface moisture content must be at a certain level for polymerization to take place. These adhesives are not cross-linked as are the surface-activated acryhcs. Rather, the cyanoacrylate material is a thermoplastic, and thus, the adhesives typically have poor temperature resistance. [Pg.233]

Nitroalkenes are shown to be effective Michael acceptor B units In three sequential re fA + B + C couplingi in one reaction vessel. The sequence is initialed by enolate nucleophiles fA and is terminated by aldehydes or acrylate electrophiles fC. The utility of this protocol is for rapid assembly of complex stnictures from simple and readily available components. A short total synthesis of a pyrroLmdine alkaloid is presented in Scheme 10.16. ... [Pg.349]

Over the last decade, the chemistry of the carbon-carbon triple bond has experienced a vigorous resurgence [1]. Whereas construction of alkyne-con-taining systems had previously been a laborious process, the advent of new synthetic methodology based on organotransition metal complexes has revolutionized the field [2]. Specifically, palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions between alkyne sp-carbon atoms and sp -carbon atoms of arenes and alkenes have allowed for rapid assembly of relatively complex structures [3]. In particular, the preparation of alkyne-rich macrocycles, the subject of this report, has benefited enormously from these recent advances. For the purpose of this review, we Emit the discussion to cychc systems which contain benzene and acetylene moieties only, henceforth referred to as phenylacetylene and phenyldiacetylene macrocycles (PAMs and PDMs, respectively). Not only have a wide... [Pg.82]

An intracellular fibrous system exists of filaments with an axial periodicity of 21 nm and a diameter of 8-10 nm that is intermediate between that of microfilaments (6 nm) and microtubules (23 nm). Four classes of intermediate filaments are found, as indicated in Table 49-13. They are all elongated, fibrous molecules, with a central rod domain, an amino terminal head, and a carboxyl terminal tail. They form a structure like a rope, and the mature filaments are composed of tetramers packed together in a helical manner. They are important structural components of cells, and most are relatively stable components of the cytoskeleton, not undergoing rapid assembly and disassembly and not... [Pg.577]

The highly functionalized hydroxypyrimidinone 3, the key intermediate for the synthesis of 1, was rapidly assembled by a two-component coupling reaction, followed by a thermal rearrangement. [Pg.167]

This procedure is not a domino process in its strictest definition, but since the oxidant tert-butyl hydroperoxide is added after allylation is complete, it is a very impressive and useful transformation for the rapid assembly of three contiguous stereogenic centers, including a tertiary alcohol moiety. [Pg.198]

Therefore, write a specification for each component — whether it is a complete software product, or a group of just a few objects in a larger program. Exceptions can be made for small components, and rapid-assembly products that are not expected to have a long life. [Pg.604]

In the resting neutrophil, about 50% of the actin is present in filaments within the cytoskeleton (and hence insoluble in detergents such as Triton X-100), whereas the remainder is detergent soluble and hence is not associated with the cytoskeleton. Data from studies of actin polymerisation in vitro predict that almost all of the actin within the cell should be F-actin (i.e. present in microfilaments). Upon stimulation of neutrophils with agonists such as fMet-Leu-Phe or PMA, actin polymerisation is activated extremely rapidly. There are two important questions Firstly, how is actin maintained in the unpolymerised state in resting cells Secondly, how is it rapidly assembled into the cytoskeleton during activation The answers to these questions lie in understanding the functions of the numerous proteins involved in the assembly and disassembly of actin filaments (Table 4.1). [Pg.133]

As an extension of the Heck reaction, Pd-catalyzed hydroarylation of alkynes and alkenes continnes to attract high level of research interest in simple couphng processes and in cyclization reactions. The use of this type of transformation as part of a domino reaction will be of increasing interest. The research in the field of domino reactions is attracting considerable attention in synthetic organic chemistry since it enables the rapid assembly of complex molecirles in one-pot processes. Very elegant examples of palladium-catalyzed cascade processes where a single catalytic cycle entails several sequential bond transformations have been recently reported [la, b, 2a, b, c]. [Pg.331]
