In the recent miscibility studies with a-methyl styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer and a a-methyl styrene/methyl methacrylate/acrylonitrile terpolymer (8), it was found that almost all miscible second components contain amides, imides, nitriles, or esters, each of which contains lone-pair electrons capable of donor-acceptor complexation—a state which... [Pg.550]

Hydrogenated NBR (HNBR) is produced by first making an emulsion-polymerized NBR using standard techniques. It then must be dissolved in a solvent and hydrogenated using a noble metal catalyst at a precise temperature and pressure.60 Almost all the butadiene units become saturated to produce an ethylene-butadiene-acrylonitrile terpolymer. [Pg.708]

The influence of -( CH2)-x binder content on the theoretical specific impulse of AP composite containing 8, 12 and 16% aluminum reaches a max at binder contents between 10 and 15% as shown in Fig 16, while the max level of acceptable physical properties occurs at the 10—16% level. Most operational proplnts accept a sacrifice in energy and operate at the 14—16% binder level since this normally determines service life. Differences in hydrocarbon binders as typified by polyurethane, polybutadiene-acrylic acid copolymer, polybutadiene-acrylic acid-acrylonitrile terpolymer and carboxy-terminated... [Pg.918]

Acrylic-styrene-acrylonitrile terpolymers, ASA, are produced by simultaneous polymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile monomers in the presence of an acrylic rubber (polybutylacrylate). Thus, the material has a two-phase strucmre similar to ABS. However the elastomer phase in ASA is saturated and thus significantly more resistant to oxidative degradation. ASA is used in applications requiring good weatherability, mostly with PVC. The blends are primarily extruded for exterior trims and window profiles applications. [Pg.673]

Styrene/acrylonitrile copolymers are used for crockery, machine components, and monofilaments. They are made less breakable by the addition of l,4-ci5-poly(butadiene) (ABS polymer). ABS polymers are sensitive to sunlight and acid (weathering in exterior use), so for these purposes ASA polymers are more suitable, i.e., terpolymers of acrylic ester, styrene, and acrylonitrile. Terpolymers of methyl methacrylate, butadiene, and styrene (MBS polymers) are transparent, in contrast to ABS polymers. [Pg.879]

The methylmethacrylate-alphamethylstyrene-acrylonitrile terpolymer system is an attractive component in compatible blends with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). The compositional window of terpolymer and terpolymer miscibility is of interest during manufacture and during blending. The common monomers in the terpolymer A, terpolymer B are a-methylstyrene, acrylonitrile, and methyl methacrylate. The B... [Pg.62]

Kranz and co-workers [126] have shown that acrylonitrile can he determined in styrene - butadiene - acrylonitrile terpolymers via a determination of organic nitrogen by the Kjeldahl procedure. Styrene units can be can be determined by infrared spectroscopy. Butadiene units can be determined by the iodine monochloride procedure. The compositional analysis and details of the microstructure of butadiene - acrylonitrile copolymers can be obtained by Raman spectroscopy [127]. [Pg.265]

The SAN and ABS cxjpolymers aantain approximately 25 wt% of acrylonitrile and polybutadiene rubber in amounts up to 20 wt%. Other styrene copolymers of industrial importance include styrene—maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA), styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer, acrylic—styrene-acrylonitrile terpolymer, and styrene-butadiene copolymer. Recently, metallocene catalysts have been developed to synthesize syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS). The polymerization process and process conditions have major effects on polymer properties and process economy. For styrene homopolymerization and copolymerization, various types of polymerization reactors are used commercially. [Pg.316]
