The preparation of fluorinated alcohols was carried out in multistep routes according to the reported procedures.1012 The synthesis of acrylic and methacrylic esters as shown in Table 11.1 was carried out in a fluorocarbon solvent such as Freon 113 by the reaction of the respective fluorinated alcohol with acryloyl chloride or methacryloyl chloride and an amine acid acceptor such as triethyla-mine with examples shown in Scheme 1. Other attempts to esterify the fluoroalcohols directly with acrylic acid or acrylic anhydride were not successful.11 Product purification by distillation was not feasible because of the temperature required, but purification by percolation of fluorocarbon solutions through neutral alumina resulted in products of good purity identified by TLC, FTIR, and H-, 13C-, and 19F- FTNMRs. [Pg.172]

It is of some interest to note that the structure of the copolymer is that of a head-to-head homopolymer of acrylic anhydride It is, of course, well established that the predominant reaction of the acrylates to irradiation is cross-linking. Such is apparently not the case for the head-to-head anhydride. [Pg.333]

Guzman (53) investigated the ceric ion initiated grafting of acrylonitrile, acrylamide, methyl methacrylate, styrene, vinyl acetate, methacrylate, acrylic anhydride, and isoprene to cellulose. Intense grafting was obtained with acrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylate and acrylic anhydride. [Pg.124]

The free radical polymerization of acrylic anhydride has been shown (37) to proceed predominantly by alternating intramolecular and intermolecular propagation steps. The product after hydrolysis and methylation has been found to yield a polymethyl acrylate exhibiting considerable crystallinity (37). [Pg.167]

Monger et al. (100) reported the synthesis and screening of a 1344-member discrete polymer library L15 as a source of catalysts for the dehydration of the p-hydroxy ketone 11.33 to the enone 11.34 (equation 1, Fig. 11.21). The main feamres of L15, obtained from poly(acrylic anhydride) 11.32 (101) as a scaffold and the amine monomer set Mi (11 representatives) are reported in Fig. 11.21. The protocols for library preparation followed the same principles seen for L14 in the previous section. The presence of both acidic (the COOH backbone, to protonate the OH in 11.33 and promote its departure) and basic groups (side chains in some Mi representatives, to promote proton abstraction) should fulfill the core functional requirements to exert the overall catalytic activity. [Pg.606]

Carboxylic Acid Functional Group Reactions. Polymerization is avoided by conducting the desired reaction under mild conditions and in the presence of polymerization inhibitors. Acrylic acid undergoes the reactions of carboxylic acids and can be easily converted to salts, acrylic anhydride, acryloyl chloride, and esters (16—17). [Pg.150]

Acrylic anhydride is formed by treatment of the acid with acetic anhydride or by reaction of acrylate salts with acryloyl chloride. Acryloyl chloride is made by reaction of acrylic acid with phosphorous oxychloride, or benzoyl or thionyl chloride. Neither the anhydride nor the acid chloride is of commercial interest. [Pg.150]

The radical polymerization of acrylic anhydride(AA) as a typical 1,6-diene has been investigated in detail in terms of cyclopolymerization. Thus, in 1958 Crawshaw and Butler(31) and Jones(32) have independently demonstrated that AA could be polymerized in solution by an alternating intramolecular-intermolecular chain propagation or cyclopolymerization, leading to the formation of saturated, linear polymers consisting exclusively of six-membered ring anhydride structure. Later, Mercier and Smets(33)... [Pg.35]

Products related in structure to 249 and 250 could be accessed through condensation of benzyl amine with tetronic acid (256) followed by aza-annulation with acrylic anhydride to give 258 (eq. 52).58 Stereoselective generation of the cis ring fusion of 259 was accomplished by catalytic hydrogenation. [Pg.347]

This observation indicates clearly that the formation of OAc-terminated oligomers proceeds not during the polymerization but after the polymerization, as shown in Scheme (6-17). Such a reaction mechanism was shown to operate for Ac=CH2 = CH—CO— (acrylic anhydride) and Ac CH2 = C(CH3)CO— (methacrylic anhydride) but was also suggested to operate for acetic anhydride 23). Thus, earlier mechanistic interpretations of THF-(CH3C0)20 systems based on the assumption that anhydrides are chain transfer agents should be abandoned. [Pg.87]

Oligomers prepared by Heitz with acrylic anhydride (60 % conversion, bulk process) had Mns ranging from 450 to 400 and functionalities from 1.8 to 2. [Pg.87]
