Summary Ammonium picramate is the ammonium salt of picramic acid, and is made by reducing picric acid with ammonium bisulfide and ammonia solution. Sulfur is a by-product and must be removed with carbon disulfide. The sulfur/carbon disulfide solution can be distilled to recover the carbon disulfide solvent, and recover the sulfur by-product. The ammonium picramate is recovered by filtration. Commercial Industrial note Part or parts of this laboratory process may be protected by international, and/or commercial/industrial processes. Before using this process to legally manufacture the mentioned explosive, with intent to sell, consult any protected commercial or industrial processes related to, similar to, or additional to, the process discussed in this procedure. This process may be used to legally prepare the mentioned explosive for laboratory, educational, or research purposes. [Pg.309]

Hazards Wear gloves and use proper ventilation when handling ammonium bisulfide, and ammonia solutions. Warning Wear gloves and use proper ventilation when handling carbon disulfide. Carbon disulfide is a highly volatile, and toxic substance. Handle with care. [Pg.309]

Problem 24.8 The //-propyl ether of 2-amino-4-nitrophenol is one of the sweetest compounds ever prepared, being about 5000 times as sweet as the common sugar sucrose. It can be made from the dinitro compound by reduction with ammonium bisulfide. Outline the synthesis of this material starting from benzene or toluene and any aliphatic reagents. [Pg.800]

HDS and HDN reactions produce H2S and NH3, respectively. Wash water is injected into the effluent from the last reactor to remove ammonia, which goes into the aqueous phase as ammonium bisulfide, NHiHSCaq). The NHjHSCaq) is rejected from the imit as sour water in downstream flash drums. [Pg.31]
