Iron carbide (3 1), Fe C mol wt 179.56 carbon 6.69 wt % density 7.64 g/cm mp 1650°C is obtained from high carbon iron melts as a dark gray air-sensitive powder by anodic isolation with hydrochloric acid. In the microstmcture of steels, cementite appears in the form of etch-resistant grain borders, needles, or lamellae. Fe C powder cannot be sintered with binder metals to produce cemented carbides because Fe C reacts with the binder phase. The hard components in alloy steels, such as chromium steels, are double carbides of the formulas (Cr,Fe)23Cg, (Fe,Cr)2C3, or (Fe,Cr)3C2, that derive from the binary chromium carbides, and can also contain tungsten or molybdenum. These double carbides are related to Tj-carbides, ternary compounds of the general formula M M C where M = iron metal M = refractory transition metal. 

The atoms listed in this section may combine with many metals to form binary compounds (compounds made up of two elements) that are saltlike in nature, but are not derived from acids. For purposes of naming, it is convenient to assign negative charges to these atoms. Except in the names of the oxides, the suffixes -ous and -ic are not used with metals forming compounds in this group. The names of all these compounds end in -ide. Only the metal oxides of this... 

Ternary salts are compounds that result from replacing the hydrogen in a ternary acid with another ion. They usually contain metal cations or the ammonium ion. As with binary compounds, the cation is named first. The name of the anion is based on the name of the ternary acid from which it is derived. 

An HPLC method using a 90-min binary gradient with (a) acidified water, pH 2.4, and (b) acetonitrile on an Adsorbosphere C]8, 3-/zl cartridge (Alltech) was also developed for pheno-lics in barley (127). Seven phenolic compounds, including vanillic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, and their derivatives, were separated by HPLC after alkaline hydrolysis in order to evaluate the role of bound phenolic acids in their antioxidant activity in beer. In this method, cis and trans isomers of p-coumaric and ferulic acids are quantified by HPLC, although cls-p-coumaric acid was not well separated from its trans isomer in this analysis. 

Binary encoding technology [71-73] has been used to identify selective CAII inhibitors from two libraries (6,727 members and 1,143 members) [419, 420]. The first library was composed of acyclic and cyclic amino acids and the second library was composed of dihydrobenzopyrans. The arylsul-phonamide moiety, a known pharmacophore for CAII inhibition, was included in order to bias the library. The active compounds identified from the first library exhibited a preference for lipophilic groups at R2 (library 35 Kd 4 nM) [419]. Again active members from the 1143 dihydrobenzopy-ran compound library were 4-carboxybenzene sulphonamide derivatives (library 36 Kd 15 nM) [420],...

Using various classes of organic compounds containing different functional groups and substituents, the authors examined the relationship between their stmcture and the kinetic parameters of sulphur vulcanisation, the mechanism of sulphur vulcanisation of unsaturated rubbers in the presence of these organic compounds, and studied the effectiveness of binary systems of accelerators. The compounds studied were phosphorylated dithiocarbamates and dithiocarbamates, derivatives of dithiophosphoric and dithiophosphonic acids, phosphorylated thioamides and thioamides, and phosphorylated thioureas and thioureas. 50 refs.
