ACETIC ACID, -AMYL ESTER (628-63-7) Forms explosive mixture with air (flash point 60°F/16°C). High heat may lead to instability. Reacts with strong oxidizers. Incompatible with strong acids, nitrates, strong alkalis. Attacks some plastics, coatings, and rubber. [Pg.8]

Unsaturated Hydrocarbons. Olefins from ethylene through octene have been converted into esters via acid-catalyzed nucleophilic addition. With ethylene and propjiene, only a single ester is produced using acetic acid, ethyl acetate and isopropyl acetate, respectively. With the butylenes, two products are possible j -butyl esters result from 1- and 2-butylenes, whereas tert-huty esters are obtained from isobutjiene. The C5 olefins give rise to three j iC-amyl esters and one /-amyl ester. As the carbon chain is lengthened, the reactivity of the olefin with organic acids increases. [Pg.381]

Lauryl alcohol has been prepared by the reduction of the aldehyde with zinc dust and acetic acid 1 by the reduction of esters of lauric acid with sodium and absolute alcohol 2 or with sodium, liquid ammonia, and absolute alcohol 3 by the reduction of lauramide with sodium and amyl alcohol.4 The method in the above procedure is essentially that described by Levene and Allen.5... [Pg.33]

Amyl Acetate or Amylacetic Ester(commonly known as Banana Oil),C5 Htl.COOCH mw 130.18- Several isomers are known of which n-amyl acetate and isoamyl acetate are the most important. They can be prepd by heating amyl alcohols with acetic acid in the presence of some sulfuric acid. Industrial methods of prepn are given in Ref 9,pp 102—3- Commercial products are usually mixts of n- and iso-amyl acetates. When amyl acetate is prepd from "fusel oil (a byproduct obtained in the raanuf of ethyl ale by fermentation), the chief component is isoamyl acetate... [Pg.393]

Figure 34 shows the results for alcohol (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol and 1-butanol), ketone (acetone and diacetyl), terpene (pinene and linalool), aldehyde (n-nonyl aldehyde) and ester (acetic acid n-amyl ester and n-butyric acid ethyl ester) of various concentrations. Because of the linear characteristics of the CTL-based sensor, the plots are located in a similar region for a certain type of gas of various concentrations where the Henry-type adsorption isotherm holds. Thus, we can identify these gases with various concentrations by simple data-processing. [Pg.130]

Amyl, butyl, and iso-propyl acetates are all made from acetic acid and the appropriate alcohols. All are useful lacquer solvents and their slow rate of evaporation (compared to acetone or ethyl acetate) prevents the surface of the drying lacquer from falling below the dew point, which would cause condensation on the film and a mottled surface appearance (blushing). Other esters of importance are used in perfumery and in plasticizers and include methyl salicylate, methyl anthranilate, diethyl-phthalate, dibutyl-phthalate, and di-2-ethylhexyl-phthalate. [Pg.604]

SAFETY PROFILE Moderately toxic by intraperitoneal route. Human systemic effects by inhalation conjunctiva irritation, headache, and somnolence. A human eye irritant. Apparently more toxic than butyl acetate. Chronic toxicity is of a low order. Dangerous fire hazard when exposed to heat or flame can react with oxidizing materials. Moderately explosive in the form of vapor when exposed to flame. To fight fire, use alcohol foam, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.
