Abstract publications

Although CA and Referativnyi Zhurnal, Khimya are currently the only chemical abstracting publications that cover the entire field of chemistry, there were a number of earlier abstracting publications now defiinct. The most important are Chemisches Zentralblatt and British Abstracts. These publications are still valuable because they began before CA and can therefore supply abstracts for papers that appeared before 1907. Furthermore, even for papers published after 1907, Zentralblatt and British Abstracts are often more detailed. Zentralblatt was published, under various names, from 1830 to 1969. British Abstracts was a separate publication from 1926 to 1953, but earher abstracts from this source are available in the Journal of the Chemical Society from 1871 to 1925. 

One of the many benefits of working for the DuPont Company in the 1960s was the availability of a company-organized abstract publication that covered the technical and patent activities in areas of interest to the operating departments. 

Although an abstract is not a substitute for the article itself, it must be concise, self-contained, and complete enough to appear separately in abstract publications. Often, authors abstracts are used with little change in abstract pub-... 

A German-language abstracting publication that ran from 1830 to 1969. For the period 1907-1969 its coverage and quality of abstracts were usually superior to CAS, and it may still be useful occasionally. An electronic file with advanced search capabilities is available from FIZ CHEMIE Berlin on a subscription basis (www.fiz-chemie.de/zentralblatt). 

Literature searches are also available from the Science and Technology Division on a fee basis. They will cite pertinent references from examination of the general collections of the library and of appropriate index and abstract publications at a cost of 8 per hour. This is a cooperative arrangement with OTS. 

Indexes or abstract publications may be used to determine the document desired. A very comprehensive bibliography on New Guides and Aids to Public Documents Use has been prepared by Jerome K. Wilcox, hbrarian of the College of the City of New York, and a well-known authority on this subject ( ). A list of books and periodical articles relating to the use of government documents, supplementing the material found in the Wilcox bibliography, was prepared recently by Spencer C. Stanford, head of the Research Library at Brookhaven National Laboratory. 

Over 7500 copies of the Definitive Report (1, above) have been sold and the Naming and Indexing book (7 above) has gone over 6300 copies in sales. The pamphlets listed are a mixture of International Union reports (sometimes with added notes and examples), ACS committee reports, and Chemical Abstracts publications. 

In addition to the regular general abstract publications, such as Chemical Abstracts, Chemisches Zentralblatt, and Biological Abstracts, two publications are devoted exclusively to the field of the essential oils. 

However, retrieval services cater for both current-awareness and retrospective search needs. Whilst computerised document retrieval services are useful for current awareness, there has been much activity to apply computer techniques to actual information retrieval, particularly for retrospective searching. This has taken the form of setting up specialised data banks for numeric and structurail information. These are a form of secondary service but are more closely related to handbooks and encyclopaedias than to abstract publications. (Data handbooks, etc., are sometimes referred to as tertiary sources, but since secondary sources are guides to the primary, the term tertiary sources is more accurately applied to guides to the secondary literature s).)... 

Abstract Public approval of an environmental analysis and impact assessment project is usually coupled with different conditions that the project is required to meet. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) constitutes an important basis for decisions regarding possible imposition of conditions. Berzelius was the lirst to determine the atomic mass of the elements with satisfactory accuracy. It was he who introduced the chemical symbols still in use. He was one of the pioneers of elemental analysis of organic substances. Berzelius wrote numerous books. His manual of chemistry has been translated into several languages and was reprinted five times in Berzelius s lifetime. In his annual reports, entitled Jahresbericht, published from 1821 until his death he critically abstracted the scientific publications of the year.
