The task of abstracting the approx. 90 journals covered by Voiume 1 and 2 of the Compendium becomes ever more difficult as chemical publications continue to appear in increasing numbers. Within a few more years it will not be possible for a team of two to continue as sole abstractors, writers, artists, typists and proofreaders for the Compendium. Perhaps a fully organized abstracting service, responsive to the needs of the synthetic chemist, will someday be set up. It would help, of course, if chemists would learn to write orderly, concise papers that can actually be read rather than deciphered. [Pg.4]

If triphenylmethyl chloride in ether is treated with sodium, a yellow colour is produced due to the presence of the anionic spiecies PhsC". Alternatively, if triphenylmethyl chloride is treated with silver perchlorate in a solvent such as THF, the triphenylmethyl cation is obtained. More conveniently, triphenylmethyl salts, PhsC X", can be obtained as orange-red crystalline solids from the action of the appropriate strong acid on triphenylcarbinol in ethanoic or propanoic anhydride solution. The perchlorate, fluoroborate and hexafluoro-phosphate salts are most commonly used for hydride ion abstraction from organic compounds (e.g. cycloheptatriene gives tropylium salts). The salts are rather easily hydrolysed to triphenylcarbinol. [Pg.406]

Abstract. A model of the conformational transitions of the nucleic acid molecule during the water adsorption-desorption cycle is proposed. The nucleic acid-water system is considered as an open system. The model describes the transitions between three main conformations of wet nucleic acid samples A-, B- and unordered forms. The analysis of kinetic equations shows the non-trivial bifurcation behaviour of the system which leads to the multistability. This fact allows one to explain the hysteresis phenomena observed experimentally in the nucleic acid-water system. The problem of self-organization in the nucleic acid-water system is of great importance for revealing physical mechanisms of the functioning of nucleic acids and for many specific practical fields. [Pg.116]

The Beilstein database [20] has more than 8.3 million (October, 2002) organic substance records from the Beilstein Handbook and abstracted from about 180 journals in organic chemistry from 1779 to the present. AH documents are critically evaluated and peer-reviewed. [Pg.248]

Chemisches Zentrallblatt. This periodical, published by the Deutsche Chemische Gesellschaft to 1945, originated in 1830 as the Phar-maceutisches Zentrallblatt, the name was changed in 1850 to Chemisches-Pharmaceutisches Centrallblatt, again in 1856 to Chemisches Centrall-blatt, and in 1907 to Chemisches Zentrallblatt. Collective indexes are available from 1870. The abstracts, particularly for organic chemistry, are very detailed to 1939. [Pg.1128]

The fluorination reaction is best described as a radical-chain process involving fluorine atoms (19) and hydrogen abstraction as the initiation step. If the molecule contains unsaturation, addition of fluorine also takes place (17). Gomplete fluorination of complex molecules can be conducted using this method (see Fluorine compounds, organic-direct fluorination). [Pg.268]

JAPIO. This database is produced by the Japan Patent Information Organization and is based on the Patent Abstracts of Japan provided by the Japanese Patent Office. The database is updated monthly and contains all Kokai Tokyo Kobo (pubUshed unexamined patent appHcations) pubUshed as of October 1976. Records appear ia JAPIO approximately six months after pubhcation of the unexamined patent appHcation. English language abstracts are provided for the majority of appHcations filed by Japanese appHcants. AppHcations by non-Japanese appHcations do not have abstracts, but bibliographic information is iacluded. Searchable fields iaclude the International Patent Office Classification and JAPIO classification (96). [Pg.126]

An additional effect of the use of an organic medium in the catalyst preparation is creation of mote defects in the crystalline lattice when compared to a catalyst made by the aqueous route (123). These defects persist in the active phase and are thought to result in creation of strong Lewis acid sites on the surface of the catalysts (123,127). These sites ate viewed as being responsible for the activation of butane on the catalyst surface by means of abstraction of a hydrogen atom. [Pg.454]
