World Intellectual Property

INPADOC (International Patent Documentation Center) is the most comprehensive tttbliographic database of scientific and technological patent documents in the world. The stock encompasses more than 26 miUion patent documents, more than 59 miUion legal status data, and about 10 million patent famihes (January, 2003). The database contains more than 35 milhon patent citations from 71 patent-issuing organizations (European Patent Office, World Intellectual Property Organization (WlPO)) and is updated weekly with about 40 000 new citations.

Most other major industrial countries have adopted similar rules, and in 2002 the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Copyright Treaty of 1996 [25] entered into force for a number of countries, including Japan and the United States. Signatories to this treaty must ensure that computer programs are protected as literary works [26]. 

Most of the equivalent patents are incorporated in the discussion, to give a sense of the international coverage to the reader. A summary of the main claim is included as a definition of the property subject matter. As could be seen the property subject matter of a World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) patent generally, is identical to one of the corresponding US patent (from the US Patent and Trademark Office, USPTO). However, in some instances a WIPO patent has more than one US equivalent patent. The equivalence between WIPO and US patents will be discussed for each particular case wherever relevant.

One important tool in the international patent world is the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). By filing an international patent application, one may seek patent protection for an invention simultaneously in each of a large number of countries. Such an application may be filed by anyone who is a national or resident of a contracting state of the PCT.
