Palladium was named after the asteroid Pallas, which was discovered at about the same time. Pallas was the Greek goddess of wisdom. [Pg.112]

Before a decision is made, all three items, ie, investment, return, and rate of return, would be examined, as would the current cash position, perceived risk, other venture opportunities, and a variety of subjective criteria. Eor this elementary situation, economists would also employ an incremental approach analogous to the above, based on the tenet that each increment of investment should itself make an adequate return. Rarely is there a unique correct decision. Only future events determine the wisdom of the selection even then, the results that another decision would have produced are rarely known. This is the essence of profitabiHty analysis. [Pg.445]

Recently, at an international conference, during the afternoon off when we were all ambling in the sunshine, a young Algerian student asked me for a word of wisdom . What elderly scholar can resist such a dewy-eyed approach from youth So 1 reflected for a moment and then told him Remember that there is not really such... [Pg.519]

The certification business has grown enormously in the last ten years. The International Accreditation Forum (lAF) recorded 616 accredited certification bodies in January 1999. The experience of the vehicle manufacturers with ISO 9000 certification led them to question the wisdom of so many certification bodies chasing the same business in a competitive market. The results seemed to indicate that cost reductions by the certification bodies led to a decline in the quality of auditing and that was the opposite of what the vehicle manufacturers wanted. The vehicle manufacturers had not seen a significant rise in product quality as a result of ISO 9000 and they believed this was partially due to the quality of the accreditation and certification schemes being operated as well as inadequacies in the quality system standard. When the four national automotive schemes were launched, great emphasis was placed on regulating more closely the accreditation and certification schemes. From a customer perspective, the ISO 10011 scheme had some particular problems ... [Pg.65]

In a mesoscopic system in which both classical- and quantum-mechanical pictures become compatible even for a short time is realised, its pragmatic significance would be very large considering technical level of today. This book is expected to offer the starting point of such new developments. In this sense. I like to express my wholehearted admiration to the eminent work of Dr. Sumio lijima who first discovered CNT. The timely contents of this book are readily conceivable by the excellent authors and I also appreciate the wisdom of my colleague editors. [Pg.1]

You will need to undertake a series of interviews to understand existing PSM and ESH programs. You may also need to conduct some interviews to confirm aspects of your quality management system. However, if the Quality Management system is not well documented this may indicate a weakness, and you should reconsider the wisdom of moving forward with the proposed integration. It is essential to test how the processes are actually functioning, as this frequently differs from any description, formal or informal. [Pg.39]

In 1803, in the course of his study of platinum, Wollaston isolated and identified palladium from the mother liquor remaining after platinum had been precipitated as (NH4)2PtCl6 from its solution in aqua regia. He named it after the newly discovered asteroid, Pallas, itself named after the Greek goddess of wisdom (ytaXXd iov, palladion, of Pallas). [Pg.1145]

Many people have eontributed their experienee and their wisdom to this workbook. Special thanks goes to Bernard Deppmeier, Andy Driessen, Tim Hume and Jeffrey Johnson at Wavefunction for their development of Spartan View, to Robert Topper (Cooper Union) and Jurgen Schnitker (Wavefunction) for their careful reading of the entire manuscript and to Patrick McDougal (Reed College) for suggesting several problems. As always, Pamela Ohsan is thanked for turning our sloppy manuscript into a finished book. [Pg.311]

The accepted wisdom is that the Hiickel Hamiltonian matrix should be identified with the matrix (h where G is the electron repulsion matrix of Chapter 6. The basis for this belief is that that the matrix (h has eigenvalues that do sum correctly to the electronic energy. [Pg.134]

In general, the range of reported experience supports the conventional wisdom. Rail is potentially the most efficient method of motorized passenger travel but bus is almost the equal of rail. Motorcycles are also quite efficient (and this assumes only the driver—motorcycles with passengers are the most energy-efficient vehicles of all). Automobiles and airlines do typically consume more energy per passenger-kilometer than rail. [Pg.972]

Fourth, I would like to extend a particularly deep thanks to my fellow traveler, Lyntis Bem d, who shares my strange predilection for weaving holistic patterns out of what most of the (Western) world sees simply as arbitrarily partitioned things. Lyntis calm presence continues to make my intellectual journey a much happier, and a far less lonely, one. I cherish your always kind and gentle wisdom. [Pg.830]

Period wisdom was that the arctic sweetness of the cream mint disguised the mouth boil of bootleggers booze. [Pg.127]

Oxidation kinetics over platinum proceeds at a negative first order at high concentrations of CO, and reverts to a first-order dependency at very low concentrations. As the CO concentration falls towards the center of a porous catalyst, the rate of reaction increases in a reciprocal fashion, so that the effectiveness factor may be greater than one. This effectiveness factor has been discussed by Roberts and Satterfield (106), and in a paper to be published by Wei and Becker. A reversal of the conventional wisdom is sometimes warranted. When the reaction kinetics has a negative order, and when the catalyst poisons are deposited in a thin layer near the surface, the optimum distribution of active catalytic material is away from the surface to form an egg yolk catalyst. [Pg.100]

The above argument is also at odds with the conventional wisdom that the well-known tendency for monomer alternation in copolymerization can primarily be attributed to polar factors. It was suggested9 that, in most cases, radical stabilization could provide an alternate explanation. A discussion on the relative importance of steric polar and radical stabilization effects on radical addition appears in Section 2.3. [Pg.350]
