Western Ukraine

In the coal-mining industry, more than 300 mines are operated in three coal-mining regions Ukraine produces only 5 5 million tons of its own oil, but the ramified network of oil pipelines supports the operation of 10 petroleum plants. The Ukrainian gas pipelines transport the Russian gas to Central and Western Europe. 

Total hafnium available worldwide from nuclear zirconium production is estimated to be 130 metric tons annually. The annual usage, in all forms, is about 85 t. The balance is held in inventory in stable intermediate form such as oxide by the producers Teledyne Wah. Chang (Albany, Oregon) and Western Zirconium in the United States Ce2us in France Prinieprovsky Chemical Plant in Ukraine and Chepetsky Mechanical Plant in Russia (crystal bar). 

The demand for sihcon in the 1990s has exceeded the installed Western world capacity. The difference has been supplemented by shipments from China, the Ukraine, and Russia. In 1993, Chinese exports reached 117,000 t, whereas exports from Ukraine and Russia were around 40,000 t (19). In 1995, the exports from China increased to 155,000 t, whereas the exports from the CIS (former USSR) countries declined. The sihcon metal shipped from these countries has been high in iron and calcium and has been used primarily in the secondary aluminum market. 

In 1875, spiritualist circles in New York helped launch the Theosophical Society, another major component of the occult revival. The Society was founded by H. P. Blavatsky (1831-1891) and Colonel Henry Steel Olcott (1832-1907). Blavatsky, who was born in the Russian Ukraine, claimed to have studied for seven years under Hindu mahatmas and even to have traveled in Tibet at a time when few Westerners were permitted into the country. Olcott had worked in the Navy Department during the Civil War he had even been one of three members of the special commission to investigate the assassination... 

The latter concept implies providing local life support systems for unfriendly environments. By now, Ukrainian scientists and engineers have developed a variety of processes for potable water treatment by adsorption, electrochemical oxidation, electrocoagulation, electro-coprecipitation, electrodialysis, electrofloatation, floatation, membrane techniques etc. Each family must get small units for water purification, air cleaning and removal of hazardous substances from the food as soon as possible, for it may take decades to introduce cleaner production on a national scale. Here, we should follow the example of Western business people who bring with them to Ukraine devices enabling a safe existence in this unfriendly environment. 

Ukrainian Catalytic Converter developed in Kiev. Being similar to its Western counterparts in performance, the device will be less expensive. Ukraine committed itself to the European Union that all its vehicles would be equipped with catalytic converters by 2003. 

Another major smoke episode occurred in Northern Europe in late April and in early May 2006. At that period there was a large number of fires in the Baltic countries, Western Russia, Belarus, and the Ukraine. Compared to the spring 2002 when the smoke episode was observed in Finland already in the middle of March (Table 1 [12]), in 2006 there was a lot of snow on the ground in Eastern Europe until the end of March. Therefore, the farmers had to wait with the burning for the unusually late snow melt, causing high frequency of fires at the end of April and beginning of May. 

Close to 90% of world ammonia production is processed in or used in the countries where it is produced. The remaining 10% to 12% of production enters international trade. The major net exporters in 1997 were Russia and the Ukraine (43% of world exports), Trinidad (22%) and the Middle East (13%). The predominance of the exports from gas-rich regions is evident. The major net importers were the USA (43% of world imports), Western Europe (26%) and certain Asian countries. Most of the ammonia that is traded is used to make fertilizers, but considerable quantities are used to produce industrial chemicals36. 

The chief mined ore of titanium is ilmenite (iron titanium oxide, FeTiC>3) and it occurs as vast deposits of sand in Western Australia, Canada and the Ukraine. Large deposits of rutile (titanium dioxide, TiO ) are known in North America, and South Africa. World production of the metal itself is around 90,000 tonnes per year, small compared to titanium dioxide production which is 4.3 million tonnes per year. Reserves of titanium amount to more than 600 million tonnes and while there is an abundance of this element it is extremely costly because it has to be extracted by a complicated process, and yet it could be so much more useful if it was cheaply available. 

Ever since the mid-1970s, Ivan the Terrible, personified by John Demjanjuk, was systematically built up to be a symbol of the Treblinka Holocaust. The circumstance that the Monster of Treblinka had to be a Ukrainian probably has historical roots in the time when the Cossacks liberated the western part of the Ukraine from Jewish oppressors and tax-collectors.19 Oaths of vengeance and instinctive hatred a la the Old Testament survive for centuries.

The natural range of the Eurasian mink (Mustela lutreola) extends through much of central Europe, Ukraine, Belarus, and western Russia, with a disjunct population in Erance. This species has become widely extirpated from much of its natural range, through a combination of habitat changes and excessive trapping. 

Radiological species can similarly be transported tremendous distances if released in aerosol form. Radioactive material released by the Chernobyl reactor in northern Ukraine in 1986 was deposited in dangerous amounts as far away as Europe, and convective weather patterns lifted some of the radioactive matter to altitudes that enabled it to reach the United States within 10 days (Ellis 2003). A particularly dense initial plume known as the Western Trace traveled over a hundred kilometers to the west of the plant in the initial wake of the catastrophic event (Chesser et al. 2004). To this day, a residential exclusion zone covering an area of 4500 kin- is maintained around the reactor. 

The worse nuclear power plant disaster on record occurred when the Chernobyl reactor in the Ukraine had a hot gas explosion. If this occurred in a Western nuclear power plant, the explosion would have been contained because Western plants are required to have a containment building. This a solid dome of steel reinforced concrete that contains the reactor. The Chernobyl plant did not have this containment feature, so the explosion blew through the roof of the reactor building allowing radiation and reactor core parts to escape into the air. 

The explosion of the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl (spelling changed recently to Chornobyl) in the Ukraine on April 26, 1986 sent radioactive material as far away as Sweden.90 The current death toll is 45. There has been a huge increase in childhood thyroid cancer, with cases as far as 500 km away 91 (U. S. bomb tests have also increased the incidence of thyroid cancers in the western United States.92) There is a 30-km exclusion zone around the plant where no one is allowed to live. This was created by the evacuation of 135,000 people 93 The accident is said to have happened because of combination of the physical characteristics of the reactor, the design of the control rods, human error and management shortcomings in the design, and implementation of the safety experiment. ... 

The distributions are similar for a number of PAHs studied (shown for FLT and BAP in Fig. 4). Areas of maximum sources apparently are in eastern and southeastern Europe (Ukraine, Romania, Poland, Belarus), while western European countries emit less and the seas (except Skagerrak) do not contribute. This is in agreement with observations in recent years, which find elevated levels in Poland and Slovakia compared to countries neighbouring to the west and south (Soderstrom et al. 2005 Grynkiewicz Bylina et al. 2005). 

European history resulted in national minorities becoming resident in different countries. For example there are stUl large communities of Poles living in Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine. The Polish academic system has special scholarships for than. The 1989 crisis also resulted in the immigration of Russians and Ukrainians to western countries. Some of those inunigrants stayed in Poland, some moved elsewhere.
