Weathering oxygen

At one time it was widely expected that EPDM rubbers would become of significance in the tyre sector. For a variety of reasons but primarily because of the high cost of the diene monomers this expectation has not been realised. On the other hand these rubbers have become widely accepted as moderately heat-resisting materials with good weathering, oxygen and ozone resistance and they find extensive use in cars, domestic and industrial equipment. [Pg.300]

By far, the most detrimental factors influencing adhesives aged in a nonseacoast environment are heat and humidity. The reasons why warm, moist climates degrade many adhesive joints were presented in the last section. Near the seacoast, corrosion due to salt water and salt spray must also be considered when one is designing an adhesive joint. Thermal cycling due to weather, oxygen, ultraviolet radiation, and cold are relatively minor factors with most structural adhesives. [Pg.332]

The use of EPDM rubbers for the manufacture of automobile and truck tires has not been successful, mainly because of poor tire cord adhesion and poor compatibility with most other rubbers. However, EPDM rubbers have become widely accepted as a moderately heat-resisting material with good weathering, oxygen, and ozone resistance. They find extensive use in nontire automobile applications, including body and chassis parts, car bumpers, radiator and heater hoses, weatherstrips, seals, and mats. Other applications include wire and cable insulation, appliance parts, hoses, gaskets and seals, and coated fabrics. [Pg.414]

Fluoroelastomers excel compared to aU other elastomers in heat, chemical, flame, weathering, fuel, and o2one resistance. In addition oU, oxygen, and water resistance ate very good. The fluoroelastomers, however, ate attacked by amines and some highly polar solvents. The abrasion resistance and low temperature properties ate adequate for most appHcations. [Pg.233]

In all cases, water and carbonic acid, the latter of which is the source of protons, are the main reactants. The net result of the reaction is the release of cations (Ca " ), Mg ", K", Na" ) and the production of alkalinity via HCO. Rubber and Synthetic Elastomers. For many years nondecorative coated fabrics consisted of natural mbber on cotton cloth. Natural mbber is possibly the best all-purpose mbber but some characteristics, such as poor resistance to oxygen and ozone attack, reversion and poor weathering, and low oil and heat resistance, limit its use to special appHcation areas (see Elastomers, synthetic Rubber, natural). [Pg.296]

Another liquid contaminant is unburned fuel. A poor-quality fuel, for example, may contain high boiling point constituents that will not all burn off in the combustion process and will drain into the sump. The practice of adding kerosene to fuel to facilitate easy starting in very cold weather will eventually cause severe dilution of the lubricating oil. Excessive use of over-rich mixture in cold weather will mean that all the fuel is not burnt because of the lack of oxygen and again, some remains to drain into the sump. [Pg.849]

Atmospheric exposure trials, carried out in Cambridge, established the fact that when rusty specimens were painted in the summer, their condition, after some years exposure, was very much better than that of similar specimens painted in the winter It was found that steel weathered in Cambridge carried spots of ferrous sulphate, deeply imbedded in the rust, and that the quantity of ferrous sulphate/unit area was very much greater in the winter than in the summer this seasonal variation was attributed to the increased sulphur dioxide pollution of the atmosphere in the winter, caused by the combustion of coal in open grates. It was concluded that there was a causal relationship between the quantity of ferrous sulphate and the effective life of the paint. It was suggested that these soluble deposits of ferrous sulphate short-circuit the resistance of the paint film and, since paint films are very permeable to water and oxygen, the ferrous sulphate will become oxidised and hydrolysed with the production of voluminous rust, which will rupture the film at numerous points, thus giving rise to the characteristic type of failure seen on painted rusty surfaces. [Pg.597]

Chlorinated polyethylene CPEs provide a very wide range of properties from soft/ elastomeric to hard. They have inherent oxygen and ozone resistance, have improved resistance (compared to PEs) to chemical extraction, resist plasticizers, volatility, and weathering. Products do not fog at high temperatures as do PVCs and can be made flame retardant. [Pg.427]
