Nicotrol, developed by Cygaus Corp. and to be marketed by Warner-Lambert, is the fourth nicotine transdermal system to be approved ia the Uoited States. It dehvers nicotine only duriag wakiag hours to mimic better the habits of smokers (109). la oae coatroUed study, ao statistical differeaces ia efficacy and good tolerabihty were observed for the wakiag and continuous regimen (112). [Pg.231]

Associations between breast cancer and total and specific fruit and vegetable group intakes were examined using standardized exposure definitions (Smith-Warner and others 2001). Data sources were eight prospective studies that had at least 200 incident breast cancer cases, included assessment of usual dietary intake, and had completed a validation study of the diet assessment method or a closely related instrument. [Pg.10]

The mechanism for the addition of singlet carbenes to alcohols has been studied in some detail (Bethell et al, 1971 Kirmse et al, 1981). By and large, the evidence supports two routes. The first, more common, sequence features initial formation of an ylid. Under some circumstances this reaction is reversible (Zupancic et al., 1985 Liu and Subramanian, 1984 Warner and Chu, 1984). Next, proton transfer, either intramolecularly, which may be slowed by symmetry constraints, or by a pair of intermolecular protonation and deprotonation steps, gives the ether. These reactions are outlined in (7). [Pg.327]

Cardiovascular Effects. There have been several reports of cardiac arrhythmias associated with application of phenol solutions to the skin in connection with the surgical procedure of skin peeling (Gross 1984 Truppman and Ellenby 1979 Warner and Harper 1985). In this procedure, a mixture of phenol ( 50% w/v), hexachlorophene, and croton oil is applied to the skin while the patient is under anesthesia. In a series of 54 patients in which the whole face was peeled in 1 day, cardiac arrhythmias were reported in 39%, while in a series of patients in which half the face was treated on 1 day, and the second half was treated 24 hours later, cardiac arrhythmias were reported in 22% (Gross 1984). The study author also indicated that the arrhythmias were less severe in the patients treated over a longer period of time. [Pg.85]

However, similar to studies of adults that show common familial and genetic risk factors for anxiety and depression (Kendler et al. 1996 Merikangas 1990 Stavrakaki and Vargo 1986), studies in children have also revealed a lack of specificity of parental anxiety and/or depression (Beidel and Turner 1997 Sylvester et al. 1988 Turner et al. 1987 Warner et al. 1995b). [Pg.169]

This example illustrates the "private-good" nature of many health risks. New studies about radon exposure risks do not alter the example s purpose (Leary 1994 Associated Press 1996 Warner, Mendez, and Courant 1996). [Pg.80]

In another series of experiments involving tricyclic dibromocyclopropanes Warner and co-workers have studied the behavior of a propellane derivative towards methyllithium either in the presence or absence of trapping agents. Whereas in the former case a dimer is produced, with diphenylisobenzofuran (DPIBF) two adducts are obtained in a 2 1 ratio in 24% yield [85]. [Pg.49]

Sulindac shows no relevant inhibition of cyclooxygenase (Warner et al., 1999), whereas the active metabolite sulindac sulfide shows inhibition of both isoenzymes with a preference for COX-1 in a whole blood assay (see also Brideau et al., 1996 ratio COX-1/COX-2 = 0.1). Sulindac is one of the NSAIDs, extensively studied in cancer reseach (Haanen, 2001). The metabolite sulindac sulfone induces apoptosis in tumor cells. [Pg.107]

The kinetics of transition from the liquid crystal to the fully ordered crystal of flexible, linear macromolecules was studied by Warner and Jaffe 38) on copolyesters of hydroxybenzoic acid, naphthalene dicarboxylic acid, isophthalic acid, and hydro-quinone. The analytical techniques were optical microscopy, calorimetry and wide angle X-ray diffraction. Despite the fact that massive structural rearrangements did not occur on crystallization, nucleation and growth followed the Avrami expression with an exponent of 2. The authors suggested a rod-like crystal growth. [Pg.14]
