Reinforcing Resins. Reinforcement and stiffness of a compound can also be achieved with the use of reactive resins. Resins consisting of two-component systems of resorcinol or resorcinol condensation products and a methylene donor such as hexamethoxymethylmel amine (HMMM) or hexamethyltetramine (HMT) are the most popular in tires. These materials can be prereacted and added to the formula, or for more effective results they can react in situ ie, they can be added separately into the formula and react when the tire is vulcanized. [Pg.250]

Labile Chlorine Containing Monomers. Chlorine is introduced in the acryhc elastomer chain by analogy to polychloroprene (19). The monomers are characterized by the simultaneous presence of a double bond available for polymerization with acrylates and a chlorine atom ready to react easily during the vulcanization step. The general formula is as follows where R is a group that might enhance the reactivity of the double bond and/or of the vicinal chlorine atom. [Pg.475]

It is beyond our control how the cross-links are spaced along the polymer chains during the vulcanization process. This extraordinary important fact demands a generalization of the Gibbs formula in statistical mechanics for amorphous materials that have fixed constraints of which the exact topology is unknown. Details of a modified Gibbs formula of polymer networks can be found in the pioneering paper of Deam and Edwards [13]. [Pg.608]

Lord Kelvin s close associate, the expert experimentalist J. P. Joule, set about to test the former s theoretical relationship and in 1859 published an extensive paper on the thermoelastic properties of various solids—metals, woods of different kinds, and, most prominent of all, natural rubber. In the half century between Gough and Joule not only was a suitable theoretical formula made available through establishment of the second law of thermodynamics, but as a result of the discovery of vulcanization (Goodyear, 1839) Joule had at his disposal a more perfectly elastic substance, vulcanized rubber, and most of his experiments were carried out on samples which had been vulcanized. He confirmed Gough s first two observations but contested the third. On stretching vulcanized rubber to twice its initial length. Joule ob-... [Pg.436]

Prior to the discovery of the vulcanization or cross-linking of hevea rubber with sulfur by Goodyear in 1838, Faraday has shown that the empirical formula of this elastomer is CsHg making it a member of the terpene family. The product obtained by pyrolysis of rubber was named isoprene by Williams in 1860 and converted to a solid (polymerized) by Bouchardat in 1879. [Pg.290]

Dichloromethane is available in several grades based on its intended end use technical aerosol vapour degreasing special urethane and decaffeination or Food Chemicals Codex/National Formula (food and pharmaceutical applications). Purity, when reported, ranges from 99 to 99.99%. Acidity (as hydrochloric acid) may be up to 5 mg/kg. The maximum concentration of water in these grades of dichloromethane is 100 mg/kg (Rossberg et al., 1986 Holbrook, 1993 Dow Chemical Co., 1995 Vulcan Chemicals, 1995, 1996a,b,c,d). [Pg.252]

The basic compounding formulation specifies the minimum requirement of fillers, vulcanizing agents, and other substances that must be added to the rubber compound to achieve the desired properties. After the rubber, cure system and reinforcing filers have been selected it will be necessary to make several adjustments before all requirements are satisfied. It is generally sensible to start with the simplest mix formula for meeting the requirements. The recipe or the formula is usually written on the basis of hundred parts of rubber. For example if 5 parts of zinc oxide is to be added it is denoted as 5 phr (five parts per hundred rubber). Elementary compounding... [Pg.11]

Pipendine. the hydrogenation product of pyridine, is used as an intermediate for drugs and for making rubber-vulcanization accelerators, e.g., piperidinium pentamechylenedithiocarbamate (also known as Accelerator 552 ). On a commercial scale, piperidine (hexahydropyridine) is prepared by the catalytic hydrogenation of pyridine, e.g., with nickel catalysts at from 68 to 136 atmospheres pressure and at l50-20C,c,C. or under milder conditions with noble-metal catalysts. Pyridine derivatives can be similarly reduced to substitute piperidines. See formulas below. [Pg.1389]

Silicone, natural, and synthetic rubbers have been used for the fabrication of implants. Natural rubber is made mostly from the latex of the Hevea brasiliensis tree and the chemical formula is the same as that of cw-1,4 polyisoprene. Natural rubber was found to be compatible with blood in its pure form. Also, cross-linking by x-ray and organic peroxides produces rubber with superior blood compatibility compared with rubbers made by the conventional sulfur vulcanization. [Pg.643]

The principles of compounding were reviewed earlier in this text and cover the fundamental characteristics of polymers, filler systems, and the basics of vulcanization in the context of compound development for tire applications. A compound formulation consists of four basic components the polymer network, the filler or particulate reinforcing system, the stabilizer system, and the vulcanization system (Figure 14.21). In addition a series of secondary materials such as resins, processing oils, and short fiber reinforcements may be included in a formula (Duddey, 2004 Rodgers and Waddell, 2004 Long, 1985). Elastomers used in radial tires are basically of four types ... [Pg.684]

The structural formula of natural rubber (NR) is shown in Scheme 12.1. NR is sticky and non-elastic by nature. Crosslinking is a reaction of polymers to form a three-dimensional network. Crosslinking of rubber is called vulcanization. The crosslinking of NR makes it elastic. When NR is irradiated by high-energy radiation, hydrogen atoms of the trunk chain, mainly of methylene groups oc to double bonds, are ejected and radical sites are formed (Scheme 12.2), and these radical sites are combined into C-C crosslinks. ... [Pg.306]
