Reinforcement short fiber

Reinforcement. PVA fiber in the form of short cut chips having a length of several millimeters to several tens of millimeters is widely used as raw material for paper and for reinforcing plastics, cement, and the like, and has been acquiring more and more significance. [Pg.342]

A composite material (1) is a material consisting of two or more physically and/or chemically distinct, suitably arranged or distributed phases, generally having characteristics different from those of any components in isolation. Usually one component acts as a matrix in which the reinforcing phase is distributed. When the continuous phase or matrix is a metal, the composite is a metal-matrix composite (MMC). The reinforcement can be in the form of particles, whiskers, short fibers, or continuous fibers (see Composite materials). [Pg.194]

There are three kinds of metal-matrix composites distinguished by type of reinforcement particle-reinforced MMCs, short fiber- or whisker-reinforced MMCs, and continuous fiber- or sheet-reinforced MMCs. Table 1 provides examples of some important reinforcements used in metal-matrix composites as well as their aspect (length/diameter) ratios and diameters. [Pg.194]

The general range of values for particle-reinforced alurninum-type MMCs is between 15—30, whereas short fiber- or... [Pg.201]

The premise that discontinuous short fibers such as floating catalyst VGCF can provide structural reinforcements can be supported by theoretical models developed for the structural properties of paper Cox [36]. This work was recently extended by Baxter to include general fiber architecture [37]. This work predicts that modulus of a composite, E can be determined from the fiber and matrix moduli, Ef and E, respectively, and the fiber volume fraction, Vf, by a variation of the rule of mixtures,... [Pg.156]

Even plastics with fairly linear stress-strain curves to failure, for example short-fiber reinforced TSs (RPs), usually display moduli of rupture values that are higher than the tensile strength obtained in uniaxial tests wood behaves much the same. Qualitatively, this can be explained from statistically considering flaws and fractures and the fracture energy available in flexural samples under a constant rate of deflection as compared to tensile samples under the same load conditions. These differences become less as the... [Pg.56]

Rosato, D. V., Injection Molding (chapter in R. F. Jones book entitled Guide to Short Fiber Reinforced Plastics), Hanser, 1998. [Pg.663]

Whiskers are short fibers, usually a single crystal with an aspect ratio of 10/1 or greater. They have high strength but are difficult to process. Their applications so far has been limited SiC whiskers are reported as random reinforcement for ceramics and in alumina cutting tools. CVD is a common production method.O Beside SiC, the following whiskers have recently been produced by CVD ... [Pg.474]

Short fiber reinforcement of TPEs has recently opened up a new era in the field of polymer technology. Vajrasthira et al. [22] studied the fiber-matrix interactions in short aramid fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites. Campbell and Goettler [23] reported the reinforcement of TPE matrix by Santoweb fibers, whereas Akhtar et al. [24] reported the reinforcement of a TPE matrix by short silk fiber. The reinforcement of thermoplastic co-polyester and TPU by short aramid fiber was reported by Watson and Prances [25]. Roy and coworkers [26-28] studied the rheological, hysteresis, mechanical, and dynamic mechanical behavior of short carbon fiber-filled styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) block copolymers and TPEs derived from NR and high-density polyethylene (HOPE) blends. [Pg.353]

Various specialty elastomers have also been used as matrices for short fiber reinforcement. Some of the examples are described below ... [Pg.353]

Fluoroelastomers Novikova et al. [32] reported unproved physico-mechanical properties of fluoro mbbers by reinforcement with chopped polyamide fibers. Other fiber reinforcements are covered by Grinblat et al. [33]. Watson and Francis [34] described the use of aramid (Kevlar) as short fiber reinforcement for vulcanized fluoroelastomer along with polychloroprene mbber and a co-polyester TPE in terms of improvement in the wear properties of the composites. Rubber diaphragms, made up of fluorosilicone mbbers, can be reinforced using aramid fiber in order to impart better mechanical properties to the composite, though surface modification of the fiber is needed to improve the adhesion between fluorosUicone mbber and the fiber [35]. Bhattacharya et al. [36] studied the crack growth resistance of fluoroelastomer vulcanizates filled with Kevlar fiber. [Pg.353]
