A systematic review of the literature aimed to assess the effectiveness of any type of complementary therapy for intermittent claudication revealed that there is no evidence of effectiveness of acupuncture, biofeedback therapy, chelation therapy, CO(2)-applications and the dietary supplements of Allium sativum (garlic), omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin E (86). [Pg.520]

Vitamin C deficiency is associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, but there is little evidence of protective effects at intakes greater than needed to meet requirements (Jacob, 1998). A systematic review (Ness et al., 1996) found limited evidence of benefits of high intakes of vitamin C in reducing the incidence of stroke, but inconsistent evidence with respect to coronary heart disease. [Pg.383]

Skin Vitamin E and its derivatives (such as tocopheryl linoleate and tocopherol acetate) in skin care products have been associated with allergic contact dermatitis. In a systematic review of 931 cases of vitamin E-induced contact dermatitis, mainly from one large study, there were no deaths and only three patients required hospitalization for treatment [ll ]. The authors concluded that vitamin E-induced contact dermatitis is uncommon, despite its widespread use in skin care products. [Pg.533]

There is evidence from animal studies to suggest that VDBP has a slightly higher affinity with vitamin D3 compared with D2 (Hollis 1984). A recent systematic review and meta-analysis found that 25(OH)D concentrations were higher after supplementing with a vitamin D3 than with a D2(Tripkovic 2012), which in part may be due to vitamin D3 s high binding affinity with VDBP. [Pg.110]

On the other hand, a systematic review of six randomized, quasi-randomized, or cluster-randomized placebo-controlled studies of the effect of prophylactic neonatal supplementation with synthetic vitamin A in developing countries has shown no effect on mortality (RR = 0.92 95% Cl = 0.75, 1.12) or morbidity, including bulging fonta-nelle (RR = 1.16 Cl = 0.81, 1.65) [21 ]. [Pg.692]

A systematic review is presented which was prepared for evidence-based recommendations on the use of vitamin D analogoues, and their combination with topical steroids in psoriasis [86. To assess efficacy across studies, two predefined criteria to account for the munerous end points found in the literature, treatment success corresponding to 90% improvement in severity, and satisfactory response corresponding to 75% improvement, were used. Then a meta-analysis was conducted comparing the efficacy of vitamin D analogoues plus topical steroids (VDS) vs vitamin D analogoues alone (VD). From the results, which were collected from 51 articles, the application duration varied between three and 52 weeks across studies. [Pg.228]
