Cluster randomization

There are four major types of sampling methods random, stratified, systematic, and cluster. Random is by far the most commonly employed method in toxicology. It stresses the fulfillment of the assumption of avoiding bias. When the entire pool of possibilities is mixed or randomized (procedures for randomization are presented in a later section), then the members of the group are selected in the order that are drawn from the pool. [Pg.874]

In some circumstances, instead of randomly assigning individuals to treatment conditions, it is informative to randomly assign groups of individuals to these conditions (Campbell et al., 2004). Examples of these groups are families and medical practices. The designs of these trials are called cluster randomized trials. Compared with trials in which individual subjects are randomized, these trials... [Pg.68]

There is also a CONSORT statement concerning the reporting of cluster randomized trials (recall Section 5.6.2). The added complexities of these studies mean that reporting guidance specifically for these trials is appropriate (see Campbell et al., 2004). Additionally, the CONSORT group has published a statement on reporting equivalence and noninferiority randomized trials (see Piaggio et al., 2006). [Pg.209]

On the other hand, a systematic review of six randomized, quasi-randomized, or cluster-randomized placebo-controlled studies of the effect of prophylactic neonatal supplementation with synthetic vitamin A in developing countries has shown no effect on mortality (RR = 0.92 95% Cl = 0.75, 1.12) or morbidity, including bulging fonta-nelle (RR = 1.16 Cl = 0.81, 1.65) [21 ]. [Pg.692]

Based on the theory of Mie modified concepts deal with non-spherical cluster shape and core shell particles. Clusters of a increasing eccentricities exhibit a splitting of the peak to two or three more or less distinct peaks. Moreover, the oblate cluster shape induces a well-defined splitting of the polarization. Thus, by choosing the appropriate polarization of the exciting beam selective excitation of modes can be done. Clusters randomly oriented with a Gaussian size distribution result in a flat and broad peak (Figure 7) [8]. [Pg.149]
