DisK Presses Figure 18-157 shows a disk press. The two disks, or press wheels, converge to a veiy narrow space at the bottom. This is the point of maximum compression, which can be more than 14 times the feed pressure. Add about the same quantity of thermate on top of the explosive. The thermate may be that obtained from the AN M-14 incendiary grenade or homemade, as described in the section on improvised incendiaries. A coarse grain thermate (coffee ground size or larger) will work better in this technique than powdered thermate, and magnesium is preferable to aluminum. 

Acrolein has been detected in effluent water streams from industrial and municipal sources. Municipal effluents from Dayton, Ohio, for example, contained between 20 and 200 pg acrolein/L in 6 of 11 analyzed samples (USEPA 1980 Beauchamp et al. 1985). Acrolein is also a component of many foods, and processing may increase the acrolein content (USEPA 1980). Acrolein has been identified in raw turkey, potatoes, onions, coffee grounds, raw cocoa beans, alcoholic beverages, hops (USEPA 1980), white bread, sugarcane molasses, souring salted pork, and cooked bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) (Beauchamp et al. 1985). 

A coffee maker has a reservoir where a quantity of clean water is poured. A small heater percolates the water up to the top of the coffee maker, where it drips down through the coffee grounds and filter assembly. The coffee product is collected in the coffee pot.

Where exhaust gases have unpleasant odours, after-burners can be supplied to raise the temperature and bum off the organic and particulate content causing the problem. 

One interesting paper by Suehara et al. used NIR to measure the cell mass in solid cultures of mushroom.41 Because mushrooms grow in solid matrices, spectroscopic analyses are sometimes difficult to perform. With coffee grounds as the main medium, reflection NIR was used for the determinations. The correlation between the glucosamine (analyte determined) predicted and that found by the conventional method was 0.992 with an SEP of 0.346 mg/g.
