Minimization of differences

The use of energy minimization can be extended to solid solutions and highly non-stoichiometric compounds. In principle the method is simple we take a suitable thermodynamic average over the results of minimizations of different possible arrangements of the atoms. The overall procedure for a solution A0.5B0.5 is then as follows ... [Pg.353]

Within the ethnocentric stages, there are three mindsets for avoiding difference Denial of difference. Defense against difference, and Minimization of differences. The ethnorelative stages include three mindsets for seeking out differences Acceptance of difference, Adaptation to difference, and Integration of difference. [Pg.166]

If the person begins to feel others are in some broad sense just like me, the predominant mindset is Minimization of difference, where the emphasis is on physiological or psychological similarity. For example, people with this mindset might say The only race is the human race or It s all about personality types. ... [Pg.167]

Minimization of differences ( deltas ) between end-of-line flare meter readings and baseline purge rates (typically attributable to small flaring sources) through flare valve surveys. [Pg.265]

Taking all these conditions into account the estimation for the minimal thickness difference of steel which could be perceptible at granularity levels equal to the limiting values for granularity in EN 584-1 results in the values given in Table 1. [Pg.552]

This method, because it involves minimizing the sum of squares of the deviations xi — p, is called the method of least squares. We have encountered the principle before in our discussion of the most probable velocity of an individual particle (atom or molecule), given a Gaussian distr ibution of particle velocities. It is ver y powerful, and we shall use it in a number of different settings to obtain the best approximation to a data set of scalars (arithmetic mean), the best approximation to a straight line, and the best approximation to parabolic and higher-order data sets of two or more dimensions. [Pg.61]

It is equivalent, when an ftk spectrometer is used, to re-apodization of the data. Curve fitting is a method of modeling a real absorption band on the assumption that it consists of a series of overlapped peaks having a specific lineshape. Typically the user specifies the number of peaks to attempt to resolve and the type of lineshape. The program then varies the positions, sizes, and widths of the peaks to minimize the difference between the model and the spectmm. The largest difficulty is in knowing the correct number of peaks to resolve. Derivative spectra are often useful in determining the correct number (18,53,54). [Pg.200]

Back-diffusion is the transport of co-ions, and an equivalent number of counterions, under the influence of the concentration gradients developed between enriched and depleted compartments during ED. Such back-diffusion counteracts the electrical transport of ions and hence causes a decrease in process efficiency. Back-diffusion depends on the concentration difference across the membrane and the selectivity of the membrane the greater the concentration difference and the lower the selectivity, the greater the back-diffusion. Designers of ED apparatus, therefore, try to minimize concentration differences across membranes and utilize highly selective membranes. Back-diffusion between sodium chloride solutions of zero and one normal is generally [Pg.173]

A key feature of MFC is that future process behavior is predicted using a dynamic model and available measurements. The controller outputs are calculated so as to minimize the difference between the predicted process response and the desired response. At each sampling instant, the control calculations are repeated and the predictions updated based on current measurements. In typical industrial applications, the set point and target values for the MFC calculations are updated using on-hne optimization based on a steady-state model of the process. Constraints on the controlled and manipulated variables can be routinely included in both the MFC and optimization calculations. The extensive MFC literature includes survey articles (Garcia, Frett, and Morari, Automatica, 25, 335, 1989 Richalet, Automatica, 29, 1251, 1993) and books (Frett and Garcia, Fundamental Process Control, Butterworths, Stoneham, Massachusetts, 1988 Soeterboek, Predictive Control—A Unified Approach, Frentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, 1991). [Pg.739]

Insurance is protec tion against risk. Commercial insurance companies minimize their own risks by covering a large number of individuals against a given risk and also by offering coverage on a wide variety of different types of risk. It is frequently quite difficult to assess the probability of success of a particular research and development project. It is much easier for an insurance company to assess its probabih-ties from its casualty tables. [Pg.831]

Analysis of soils is an important task in the environmental researches. Reliability of ICP-MS results of soil analysis mainly depends on chemical sampling. Recently microwave systems are widely used for preparation of different samples. Influence of microwave radiation on sample ensures a complete decomposition of sample, greatly increases the mineralization, and allows possible losses of volatile elements to be minimized. In the given study to intensify decomposition of soils we applied the microwave sample preparation system MULTIWAVE (Anton Paar, Austria and Perkin-Elmer, USA) equipped with rotor from 6 autoclaves with TEM reaction chambers of 50 ml volume. [Pg.287]

Relative width of region of unreliable reaction (5) was estimated as the ratio of difference between maximum and minimal concentrations to minimal concentration in this region. The test-system containing Co [Fe(CN)g] is the most resistant to uncontrolled factors, the lowest detection limit characterizes a film with Ni,[Fe(CN)J. The possibility of test-films application for quantitative determination of nitroxoline is testified. [Pg.325]

Figure 1 The course of energy minimization of a DNA duplex with different choices of coordinates. The rate of convergence is monitored by the decrease of the RMSD from the final local minimum structure, which was very similar in all three cases, with the number of gradient calls. The RMSD was normalized by its initial value. CC, IC, and SG stand for Cartesian coordinates, 3N internal coordinates, and standard geometry, respectively. The first element, dynamic dilution, provides a reproducible sample for each panelist. The system must minimize the loss of the odorant to the walls of the delivery apparatus, provide clean dilution air of odor-free quality, maintain a constant dilution ratio for the duration of a given test, and have no memory effect when going from high to low concentrations or switching between odorants of different character. The type of mask or port and the delivery flow rate have been found to influence the response of panelists in determining odor threshold and intensity. [Pg.207]
