Vehicle incidents

Transport incidents a section in the report is devoted to a discussion of vehicle incidents and prevention initiatives. 

Transport Incidents there are global targets to reduce motor vehicle incidents. During 1998 there were 3.70 accidents per million miles. This represents a slight reduction on 1997. The EH S goal for 2005 is 2.5 per million miles (a 50% reduction on 1994). 

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that Fire Departments in the United States responded to an estimated 278,000 vehicle incident fires in 2006. 

Any motor vehicle incident that occurs entirely in any place other than traffic. 

Federal, state, and local governments require employers, manufacturers and others to maintain certain safety records. They may also require submitting certain reports. For example, employers must keep records of job-related incidents. Automobile drivers must complete a police incident report following a vehicle incident. Building owners must maintain records on maintenance and inspection of elevators. Later sections of this chapter will explore some of these record keeping and reporting requirements.

Incident as used here refers to any incident that has the potential to cause injury or illness. Thus it includes actual lost-workday injuries and illnesses, non-lost-workday injuries and illnesses, first-aid cases, near misses, vehicle incidents, and equipment damage incidents (such as forklift coUisions with stationary objects, pump failures, spills, etc.). Some of these incidents may not be routinely documented in many organizations.

The power and light company experienced substantial safety improvements as a result of our innovative behavioral safety implementation. Figure 25.4 demonstrates the significant decreases in lost-workday cases, medical aid injuries, and vehicle incidents after the behavioral implementation. Figure 25.5 illustrates the increase in safety scores after the intervention was implemented. The safety committee did not announce that employees were being observed while they collected the baseline... 

One of the companies that I worked with perceived that they had a problem with vehicular accidents. Various safety management personnel decided to profile a typical motor vehicle incident. They obtained vehicular accident files for a two-year period and examined the following parameters ... 

Usefulness Will the data collected be able to be utilized to make meaning improvements Can others be able to utilize the data to improve Data is collected on motor vehicle incidents, but what management needs is data on how effective two particular safety initiatives are at preventing or reducing the motor vehicle incidents.
