Meaning-making

The primary goal of scaleup is to maintain acceptable product quahty. Ideally, this will mean making exactly the same product in the large unit as was made in the pilot unit. To this end, it may be necessary to alter the operating conditions in the pilot plant so that product made there can be duplicated upon scaleup. If the pilot plant closely approaches isothermal piston flow, the challenge of maintaining these ideal conditions upon scaleup may be too difficult. The alternative is to make the pilot plant less ideal but more scaleable.

Reification means to make real. We use it to mean making an object from some concept. In a model, we can feel free to represent any concept as an object in a design, reification is the decision to write a class to represent that concept. 

GC and HPLC allow for ready quantification of the components exiting the column in that the area under the peak in the chromatogram is proportional to the amount of component present. However, to make a quantitative analysis, it is essential to have a calibration curve (see Chapter 14) for each of the components of interest. Cloning a gene means making copies of the same DNA sequence. As described above, this can be done with PCR.
