One must distinguish between resistant species and resistance within species. The use of the former as substitutes for susceptible species in parks, industrial areas, and other urban settings is more properly discussed in ecological engineering terms. We are primarily interested here in the identification and use of resistant variants within species and the use of several plant breeding techniques to obtain new and improved resistant varieties. These techniques include selection of resistant plants within varieties, selection of resistant varieties within species, and crosses between varieties with subsequent selection of improved progenies.

Variety selection will be influenced similarly. For example, a high yielding but disease-susceptible variety might be planted if immunoassays indicate relatively low pathogen levels in a certain field.

It will be seen from the foregoing that farmers have to use a wide range of powerful agents (Fig. 12.11) to produce high yields of good quality, undamaged hops. Brewers are worried that residues from these chemicals may persist on the hops at harvest and so find their way into the beer. (The detection of such residues is a difficult analytical problem.) Hop varieties selected for resistance to disease, which require minimal chemical treatment, would be preferred but the breeding of a variety resistant to all the pests and diseases which can attack hops is unlikely. 

Whilst it has been stated that rotatiorrs are a cornerstone of IFM, there can be little doubt that the choice of variety selected to be grown is an integral part of the philosophy. If the aim is to reduce the application of crop protection chemicals the starting point must be to choose varieties from the HGCA Recommended Lists that have resistance to disease. The next important step in the implementation of a crop protection policy involves the correct identification and evaluation of a pest problem.
