Vapor permeable adhesive films

Vapor permeable adhesive films are of use in those wounds in which granulation tissue is established and wound exudate is declining. These products were developed as materials that would, in part, mimic the performance of skin. The resultant products were transparent, synthetic adhesive films generically described as vapor permeable adhesive membranes, and comprised of transparent polyurethane or other synthetic films of low reflectance, evenly coated on one side with a synthetic adhesive mass. The adhesive is cohesive and inactivated by contact with moisture and will not therefore stick to moist skin or the wound bed. The films are permeable to water vapor, oxygen, and carbon dioxide but occlusive to water and bacteria and have highly elastomeric and extensible properties. They are conformable, resistant to shear and tear, sterile and particle free. [Pg.1028]

Vapor permeable adhesive films derived from materials found in some tissues are being used more commonly in wound management. Most of the available films are composed of industrially manufactured and purified benzyl ester derivatives of hyaluronic acid and may be used for direct application to wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers or venous leg ulcers or as scaffolds for the cultivation of fibroblasts and keratinocytes for further transplantation. [Pg.1035]

Pull test results for all three substrates showed that the films enriched with tin have higher adhesive and cohesive strengths than those of higher carbon content. The metallic films acted as good water vapor permeability barriers in accord with what is expected for metal coatings. [Pg.552]

Further investigations should study correlations between responsiveness of the thin films and properties of textiles and cloth. Although many useful properties of responsive textiles can be imagined, it is important to identify how practically they could be explored for textile materials of different applications. Many different scenarios could be suggested to employ the responsiveness. Some examples are as follows. For a direct switching effect (textile hydrophilic in water and hydrophobic in air) the cloth will adsorb excess perspiration and it can then be easily washed in water, but in a dry state it will be hydrophobic with less friction and less adhesion. For an inverse switching effect (textile hydrophilic in air and hydrophobic in water) the cloth will be permeable for vapors, but an excess of water will block permeability of the materials for aqueous solutions. Experiments should discover which properties will be most attractive and important to consumers. [Pg.490]
