Install flame arresters on atmospheric vents to prevent fire on the outside of the tank from propagating back into the vapor space inside the tank. Provide fire resistant insulation for critical vessels, piping, outlet valves on tanks, valve actuators, instruments lines, and key electrical facilities. Provide remote controlled, automatic, and fire-actuated valves to stop loss of tank contents during an emergency provide fire protection to these valves. Valves should be close-coupled to the tank, and must be resistant to corrosion or other deleterious effects of spilled fluids. Vessels should be provided with overpressure relief protection. [Pg.46]

Of the final control elements discussed, the most widely used in power plants are valves. Valves can be easily adapted to control liquid level in a tank, temperature of a heat exchanger, or flow rate. [Pg.160]

Valves, the use of which may be necessary for the safe operation of a hydrogen distribution system, shall be checked and serviced, including lubrication where necessary, at sufficiently frequent intervals to assure their satisfactory operation. Examination shall include checking of alignment to permit use of a key or wrench and clearing from the valve box or vault any debris that would interfere with or delay the operation of the valve. Valves in hydrogen service shall be checked and serviced at least annually. [Pg.73]

A. ACTION OF THE VALVE. Valves are designed to either fail in the wide-open position or completely shut. Which action is appropriate depends on the effect of the manipulated variable on the process. For example, if the valve is handling steam or fuel, you would want the flow to be cut off in an emergency, i.e., you want the valve to fail shut. If the valve is handling cooling water to a reactor, you... [Pg.213]

Both floating and trunnion-mounted designs are available with other design variations that include metal seied valves, soft seated valves, top-entry valves, end-entry valves, and split body valves. Valves in all these design variations are available as either full port or reduced port. Port refers to the round-bore fluid flow area through the ball. Full port valves have a bore that is approximately equal to the inside diameter of the mating pipe. Reduced port valves have a bore that is approximately equal to the inside diameter of pipe one size smaller than full bore. [Pg.97]

Valves can be safely handled by means of long extension shafts which are led through the wall of a barricade. The stems must be secured against the possible blow-out during an uncontrolled pressure release for example in the case of a broken stem at the inner side of the valve. Valve extension handles should be arranged in sleeves welded to the valve stem inside the barricade [3]. [Pg.407]

There are many different types of valve fitted with actuators to form control valves. Valves may be single- or double-ported (Fig. 7.123). With single-ported valves the valve plug is subjected to the total differential force across the valve. Such valves are sensitive to pressure fluctuations and powerful actuator elements are required for large pressure drops. Double-ported valves balance out the pressure differential but it is difficult to obtain complete shut-off. [Pg.722]

Pinch The industrial equivalent of controlling flow by pinching a soda straw is the pinch valve. Valves of this type use fabric-reinforced elastomer sleeves that completely isolate the process fluid from the metal parts in the valve. The valve is actuated by applying air pressure directly to the outside of the sleeve, causing it to contract or pinch. Another method is to pinch the sleeve with a linear actuator with a specially attached foot. Pinch valves are used extensively for corrosive material service and erosive slurry service. This type of valve is used in applications with pressure drops up to 10 bar (145 psi). [Pg.76]
