Filter Press The filter press, one of the most frequently used filters in the early years or the chemical industry, is still widely employed. Often referred to genetically (in error) as the plate-and-frame filter, it has probably over 100 design variations. Two basic popular designs are the flush-plate, or plate-and-frame, design and the recessed-plate press. Both are available in a wide range of materials metals, coated metals, plastics, or wood. 

Rotary Drum Filters The rotaiy drum filter is the most widely used of the continuous filters. There are many design variations, including operation as either a pressure filter or a vacuum filter. The major difference between designs is in the technique for cake discharge, to be discussed later. All the alternatives are characterized by a horizontal-axis drum covered on the cylindrical portion by filter medium over a grid support structure to allow drainage to manifolds. Basic materials of construc tion may be metals or plastics. Sizes (in terms of filter areas) range from 0.37 to 186 m (4 to 2000 ft ). 

Power calculations for screw conveyors are well standardized. However, each manufaciurer has grouped numerical constants in a different fashion and assigned slightly different values on the basis of individual design variations. Thus, in comparing screw-conveyor...

These and many other specifics have dictated a host of design variations. It should be emphasized that each application requires thoughtful engineering consideration before final design selection.

Ten University of California field stations located throughout the state (Figure 2) allow for the study of the evaporation beds under several climatic and design variations (Table I). All the evaporation beds were sampled except the one located farthest away, at the Imperial Valley station. The evaporation beds vary In temperature range and annual precipitation, and In such design considerations as size, soil depth, soil pH, the presence or absence of storage tanks, a roof over the bed or slab area, and whether or not the soil Itself has been amended with hydrated lime. The beds also differ In the specific pesticide wastes disposed, and the longevity and Intensity of use. 

There is another plug that has been patented but is waiting for manufacture called the Firestorm Plug . This comes in several design variations but all have the same basic concept of having a domed central electrode and... 

The formation of an anodic film on alkali metal anodes is mentioned in (129b). If it can be confirmed that Li is not unique in its reaction with water, as it is claimed in (123-124), then Na may also develop such a film in contact with H2O or non-aqueous liquids and so be protected. Design variations in Na-H20 primary batteries are described (130-132). 

Both floating and trunnion-mounted designs are available with other design variations that include metal seied valves, soft seated valves, top-entry valves, end-entry valves, and split body valves. Valves in all these design variations are available as either full port or reduced port. Port refers to the round-bore fluid flow area through the ball. Full port valves have a bore that is approximately equal to the inside diameter of the mating pipe. Reduced port valves have a bore that is approximately equal to the inside diameter of pipe one size smaller than full bore. 

Again due to experimental design variations, the linear dynamic range varies from 102 to 1014 and also varies with the compound examined. 

Several design variations are possible for a direct freeze-separation process. The one reported utilizes the evaporation of water directly in an evacuated freeze chamber to form ice crystals and concentrated brine. Separation of ice from brine does not use any mechanical devices, such as centrifuges, but simply a counterflow wash column of ice being moved by applied hydraulic forces. 

Two forms of the basin-type solar distiller are shown in Figures 1 and 2. Each of these is subject to numerous minor design variations. The configuration of the glass-covered still shown is an improved form of a 1-acre brackish water distillation plant built in Chile in 1872 (3). 

China white was popular on the West Coast of the United States in the early 1980s and was estimated at 6,000 times the potency of morphine. In the late 1980s, fentanyl was introduced into the club scene in New York, and designer variations were spawned. In the 1990s fentanyl was introduced as a lollipop for young cancer patients to treat their pain and suffering. In this form it entered into all-night raves and club parties.
