Oestradiol and progesterone regulate the structural and functional changes in oviducts, uterus, cervix and vagina that occur during the menstrual cycle. They provide conditions in the oviduct for the upward motility of sperm, and the downward movement of ova, and also conditions favourable for fertilisation in the oviduct and implantation in the uterus. Another effect is to stimulate vaginal secretions.

The effects of OT appear to be species-specific (Wang et ah, 2000). Thus, while OT appears not to be essential for the onset of maternal behavior in mice (Barnes and Pompeiano, 1991), it may be essential for the onset of maternal behavior in species that become maternal at parturition, such as rats and sheep (Wang et al., 2000). In sheep, the central release of OT, prompted by parturition and/or stimulation of the vagina and cervix, has been implicated in the induction of maternal behavior OT release increases with maternal experience (Levy et al., 1995). This enhanced OT release at parturition is associated with elevated acetylcholine, noradrenaline, and GABA release, which are in turn associated with olfactory memory this may explain the shorter period of time needed by multiparous ewes to selectively bond with lambs. 

A number of drug substances are known to act directly upon the uterus, including uterine relaxants (e.g., (3-agonists) and stimulants (e.g., prostanoids, oxytocin). The administration of drugs to the uterus is achieved by the application of a formulated product to the vagina or the cervix. However, it has been demonstrated that the mechanism by which the drug is transported from the cervicovagina to the uterus is not limited to passive diffusion, but is facilitated by a preferential transport mechanism termed as the first uterine pass effect.

Goldenseal seems best when used for six purposes for active infections, inflammations, or ulcerations in the gastrointestinal tract, from gums to rectum for active infections in the sinuses when used as snuff or sinus wash for active infections in the vagina when used as a douche for active skin infections when used as a powder or wash for active eye infections when used as a wash and as a stimulant/tonic (when used in moderation and for limited duration) in general for mucous membranes throughout the body to help tone them and help them serve their function as one of the first lines of defense against bacterial infection.
