Uva-ursi

Uva-ursi is known to have diuretic, urinary antiseptic, and astringent properties. Traditionally, it has been used for cystitis, urethritis, dysuria, pyelitis, lithuria, and specifically for acute catarrhal cystitis with dysuria and highly acidic urine. [Pg.104]

valerian is used for treating insomnia. It is known to have sedative, mild anodyne, hypnotic, antispasmodic, carminative, and hypotensive properties. Traditionally, it has been used for the treatment of fatigue, seizures, hysterical states, excitability, insomnia, hypochondriasis, migraine, cramp, intestinal colic, rheumatic pains, dysmenorrhea, and specifically for conditions producing nervous excitability. [Pg.104]

Vervain is stated to possess sedative, thymoleptic, antispasmodic, mild diaphoretic, and galacta-gogue properties. Traditionally, it is used for depression, melancholia, hysteria, generalized seizures, cholecystalgia, jaundice, early stages of fever, and specifically for depression and debility of convalescence after fevers, particularly influenza (see Chapter 65). [Pg.104]

A curious but perhaps significant observation is that,a 1 though several plant families retain the ability to biosynthesise different types of complex polyphenol, rarely are both biosynthetic capabilities displayed maximally. More often one particular species specialises in one particular mode. Thus in the Ericaceae many plants are rich sources of proanthocyanid ns but Arcto-staphylos uva-ursi has only a minimal proanthocyanid in biosynthetic capacity but combines with this a very high level of gallic acid metabolism. [Pg.132]

As a reliable tonic diuretic, the medicine is much appreciated in kidney and bladder disorders, whether acute or chronic. Although frequently successful when taken alone, it is more usually prescribed with other agents such as Parsley Piert, Uva Ursi, and Buchu. The berries are sometimes included with suitable alteratives in formula for rheumatic complaints. [Pg.56]

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (bearberry) contains a steroid, sitosterol, and triterpenoids, such as amyrin, betulinic acid, lupeol, oleanolic acid, taraxenol, ursolic acid, and uvaol. The main constituent is a glucoside called arbutin. Other constituents are methylarbutin, ericolin, ursone, gallic acid, and ellagic acid. [Pg.1235]

Connation and Adnation.—In the development of the flowers of primitive species of flowering plants, the parts of each whorl are disjoined or separate from each other. In many higher types, however, the parts of the same whorl frequently become partly or completely united laterally. This condition is termed connation, coalescence, cohesion or s)mgenesis. Illustrations of this ihay be seen in Belladonna, Stramonium and Uva Ursi flowers, where the petals have joined laterally to form gamopetalous corollas. When the one or more parts of different whorls are united, as of stamens with petals Rhammus) or stamens with carpels Apocynum) the union is called adnation or adhesion. [Pg.183]

Urceolate, or Urn-shaped, when the tube is globose in shape and the limb at right angles to its axis, as in the official Uva Ursi, Chinia-phila and Gaultheria. [Pg.188]
