Using the Test Result

Table 9.7 summarizes the comparison of SEC column performance with regard to particle size of the packing material. The author tried to create this table using the test results of different manufacturers of styrene-divinyl-benzene columns.

Tests are no available that measure 1,1-dichloroethane in urine, blood, breath and body tissues. Because urine, blood, and breath samples are easily obtained, these samples are examined to determine if a person has been exposed to 1,1-dichloroethane. These tests are not routinely available at a doctor s office and would require special equipment for sampling and detection of the compound. Since most of the 1,1-dichloroethane that is taken into the body leaves within two days, these tests must be done soon after exposure occurs. Although these tests can confirm that a person has been exposed to 1,1-dichloroethane, it is not yet possible to use the test results to predict the type or severity of any health effects that might occur or the level of exposure that may have occurred. Because exposure to 1,1-dichloroethane at hazardous waste sites is likely to include exposure to other similar chemicals at the same time, levels of 1,1-dichloroethane measured through these types of medical tests may not reflect exposure to 1,1-dichloroethane alone. Information regarding tests for the detection of 1,1-dichloroethane in the body is presented in Chapters 2 and 6. 

There could be numerous uses for the recovered carbon black for rubber goods such as vehicle tires, footwear, rubber sheets, conveyer belts, dockfenders, etc. Some samples of rubber goods such as bicycle tires and safety shoes have been made with the recovered carbon black and their durability has been tested in comparison with commercial ones. At least in short term tests, for example, three months, the safety shoes made with the recovered carbon black showed higher abrasion resistance than the commercial shoes in which HAF-LS carbon black was used. The test results are shown in Table IV (6). 

As with the CWA and the SDWA, the USEPA s decision to register a pesticide is based in part on a risk assessment, using the test results supplied by the manufacturer, of adverse effects on human health and the environment. Registration therefore attempts to ensure that pesticides will be labeled properly and, if used in accordance with specifications, will not cause unreasonable harm to the environment.

Detailed failure analysis of failed samples is a crucial step in the qualification and validation program. Without such analysis and feedback to designers for corrective action, the purpose of the qualification program is defeated. In other words, it is not adequate simply to collect failure data. They are very useful not only for testing. They are being used in practical commercial cells. Figure 9 shows electrode preparation with TAB. Figures 10, 11 and 12 show the test results for a Mn02 sample (IC No. 17) in 9 mol L"1 KOH and 25% ZnCl2 (+5% NH4C1) solutions. 

As reviewed throughout this book one must determine what measures were taken to evaluate the materials. Carefully study the test results and test methods that are employed in obtaining these properties and their interpretation for application purposes (Chapter 5), and finally determine the fine details of use conditions to establish the suitability of a plastic material for the intended product. It is easily accomplished to determine the plastic to be used but requires familiarity with the test results being evaluated and behavior of plastics to meet your performance requirements. 

This test has possible advantages over the notched Izod test. The notch sensitivity factor is eliminated, and energy is not used in pushing aside the broken portion of the specimen. The test results are recorded in ft-lb/in.2 (kJ/m2). This allows for minor variations in dimensions of the minimum in cross-section area.
