Use of Starch as a Coating Binder

Starch grafts are a new class of products for use on the size press.212,213 They have high water retention and form flexible films. They are offered as a liquid, ready-to-use binder on conventional and metered size presses and on calender water boxes. Starch grafts are used in pigmented formulations for the production of film-coated offset, recycled offset, textbook and LWC (lightweight coated) grades, and as precoat for double-coated, sheet-fed offset grades. [Pg.695]

Hydrophobic starches are another new class of starches for use on the size press. Some grades are based on waxy starches and are esterified. Hydrophobic starches provide improvements in water, ink and solvent holdout, as well as decreased sheet porosity. [Pg.695]

Synthetic sizes, such as styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymer or anionic polyurethane (PU) emulsion, are often added to starch-based surface size to develop water resistance, particularly in the production of label grades. Starch can be enzymically converted in the presence of pigment. The conversion follows a similar time-temperature cycle as in neat starch conversion. The pigment will adsorb a portion of the enzyme adsorption can be minimized by the addition of sodium silicate to the mixture prior to the addition of the enzyme (Vanderbilt process). Even with silicate treatment, a higher quantity of enzyme will be required to reach a specific viscosity target. Other coating components, such as latex and lubricants, have to be added after the conversion. The Vanderbilt process is now rarely used for the preparation of coating binder. [Pg.680]
