Process Update

The system should assure all changes are reviewed and approved by a designated authority. All personnel need to understand their role in this updating process and whether they have authority to deviate from procedures. Formal review and update should be part of this system.

Chapters 4 and 7 in the First Edition were written by Vivian Stead and Chapter 5 by Frank Jones. Sadly, Frank died in 1989 and Vivian in 1996, but my co-authors and myself would like to record our tribute for the major contributions to this volume by our former friends and colleagues. We have tried to preserve their original style intact during the necessary updating process. Sections of the Redbook have been updated in phases in October 2001, November 2003, and April 2004, and the updating process is continuing. Alternative approaches can be used but should be discussed with the OFAS. All toxicological studies must be in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice regulations published in 21 CFR Part 58. 

During the implementation or update process, the introduction of a computer validation management cycle will provide a top-down approach to integrate computer systems validation strategies in order to support the project. Figure 5-1 suggests a computer validation management cycle. 

Many of the larger reference works given here have made, or are making, the transition to electronic access. In assessing the worth of the latest available electronic version, which may not carry a definite edition number, it is important to check the thoroughness of the updating process and ensure that a reputation founded on a large backfile continues to be justified in terms of currency.

A typical structure of a closed-loop RTO system is shown in Fig. 6, which consists of subsystems for data validation, model updating, model-based optimization, and command conditioning. Raw measurements taken from the plant are filtered and checked for reliability in the data validation subsystem. Because, model-based RTO systems rely on model updating to correct for modeling errors and disturbances, an effective model updating system is required to ensure that the RTO system tracks the changing optimal operations closely. Model updating, most commonly effected via on-line estimation of some set of model parameters, uses the validated data. The updated process model is then used by the model-based optimization... 

Furthermore, it is important how servers obtain continuous data (e.g., load data from monitors, see the next subsections). We considered two strategies called caching and polling. Caching involves a passive server that regularly collects data sent by other system components, whether or not the information is actually needed. The PMS should be designed to monitor the status of all the main circuits in the system, the generator currents and powers, and all the outgoing currents and powers. The monitoring should be a cycle updating process, with a cycle period of at least five cycles of fundamental frequency e.g. 100 to 250 millisec, to allow power transients to decay. 

As part of the solution, older mainframe units with isolated PCs were replaced with Windows NT servers tmd networked PCs. Client/server softwme was purchased along with appUcation software that allowed the compemy to share database information among its geographically dispersed offices. Shared, replicated databases provided a more streamlined, real-time update process. Electronically stored specifications allowed quicker access and thus quicker order fulfillment. 

Updating process models requires feedback about the current state of the system and any changes that occur. In a system where rapid response is necessary, timing requirements must be placed on the feedback information that the controller uses to make decisions. In addition, when task performance requires or implies a need for the controller to assess timeliness of information, the feedback should include time and date information. 

Because humans without direct control tasks will lose vigilance, the design should combat lack of alertness by designing human tasks to be stimulating and varied, to provide good feedback, and to require active involvement of the human controllers in most operations. Maintaining manual involvement is important, not just for alertness but also in getting the information needed to update process models.
