United Kingdom declining production

The market for tar-based road binders has declined considerably for a variety of reasons. Less cmde tar is available and the profits from the sales of electrode pitch and wood-preservation creosote or creosote as carbon-black feedstock are higher than those from road tar. In most industrial countries, road constmction in more recent years has been concentrated on high speed motorways. Concrete, petroleum bitumen, or lake asphalt are used in the constmction of these motorways. In the United Kingdom, for example, the use of tar products in road making and maintenance had fallen from 330,000 t in 1960 to 100,000 t in 1975 and is less than 100 t in 1994, mainly based on low temperature pitch which is not suitable for electrode or briquetting binders, but which is perfectly satisfactory as the basis for road binders. 

Consumptions of primary tin for chemical appHcations by the five reporting countries from 1975 to 1980 is shown in Table 12. The use of primary tin in chemical appHcations increased sharply in the United States and Germany, but declined in the United Kingdom and Italy. In 1979, ca 11% of the total U.S. demand for tin was accounted for by tin chemicals. In 1977, the tin consumption in tin chemicals production was based on ca 80% primary tin usage... 

However, an independent analysis of workroom levels of chromium in the three chromate production factories in the United Kingdom performed around 1950 indicated average levels for various phases in the process ranging from 0.0006 to 2.14 mg chromium(III)/m3 and from 0.002 to 0.88 mg chromium(VI)/m3 (Buckell and Harvey 1951). The importance of further follow-up of the cohort to confirm that the risk has declined with improvements in the working environment, of simultaneous analysis of such factors as age, duration of employment, and time since first exposure, and of examining smoking habits was emphasized (Davies et al. 1991). 

Initially, public reluctance to consume a microbe-derived oil in preference to those from plant or animal sources was a considerable problem, contributing to the decline of Oil of Javanicus (the first commercially produced SCO) see Section 2.1.1. However, a mixture of more asmte marketing, rebranding of SCO as either fermented oils, designer oils, or even vegetarian oils when in competition with animal oils, and the improved public acceptance of microbial foods, as exemplified by the success of the mycoprotein (SCP) product, Quorn , in the United Kingdom and Europe, has helped establish PUFA-SCOs as acceptable products. 

Foreign direct investment in chemicals and allied products in the United States has increased more than sixfold from 1980 through 1994, as shown in Table 9.12. New investment outlays by foreign companies amounted to about 80 billion in 1996 but declined to about 70 billion in 1997. Mussel capture fisheries peaked in 1992 (276 tons) and 2000 (262 tons), hi 2003, mussel catches dropped drastically to 17% and 23% from 2004 to 2005. The decline was caused by lower production in Denmark. Nevertheless, Denmark continues to be, so far, the main capturing country, accounting for about half of the mussel catch (69,155 tons). Other important producers of wild mussels include Italy (35,065 tons), Turkey (12,362 tons), the United Kingdom (11,158 tons), and the United States (10,566 tons) in 2004.
