The most specific biomarker of exposure to methyl parathion is the presence of the compound in serum or tissue. This is an especially good biomarker for detection shortly after acute exposure. For example, methyl parathion levels were detected in the sera of five men who were exposed for 5 hours in a cotton field 12 hours after it was sprayed with methyl parathion. The route of exposure was dermal, through unprotected hands. Serum levels averaged 156 ppb after 3 hours of the 5-hour exposure, and averaged 101.4 and 2.4 ppb at 7 and 24 hours postexposure, respectively (Ware et al. 1975). 

Forde et al.20 used a more complex study design to examine the effect of boiled coffee vs. paper-filtered coffee vs. coffee abstinence. The investigation involved 33 men with elevated baseline serum cholesterol levels (average 8.7 mmol/L [335 mg/dL]) who apparently were habitual boiled coffee drinkers (implied but not stated). The 10-week study was divided into two 5-week periods. Subjects were assigned to one of four groups (1) continuation of habitual consumption (control), (2) abstinence from coffee for the full 10 weeks, (3) abstinence from coffee for the first 5-weeks, followed by 5 weeks of paper-filtered coffee consumption, and (4) abstinence from coffee for the first 5 weeks, followed by 5 weeks of boiled coffee consumption. 

In a historical cohort mortality study of 1,990 primary lead smelter workers, an SMR of 2.04 for mortality from renal cancer was calculated (Selevan et al. 1985). The cohort consisted of workers who had worked at least 1 year, with at least 1 day of employment at the smelter between 1940 and 1965. The cohort had been heavily exposed to lead and in 1976 the PbB levels averaged 56.3 pg/dL. Exposures to cadmium and arsenic were generally minor. A follow-up study of this cohort was conducted from 1977 through 1988 (Steenland et al. 1992). The GSH level in erythrocytes is determined by a nitroprusside method (G20) slightly modified (B6). Lower toxaphene concentrations have been found in smaller lakes within the Great Lakes watershed. Muir et al. [77] found toxaphene levels averaging 95 pg L 1 in Lake Nipigon (Table 5). Total toxaphene in Lake Siski-wit (Isle Royale) surface water sampled in May 1998 was 210 pgL-1 [74]. Chlorobornane congeners were not determined in this sample however, the heptachlorobornanes were the predominant homolog group (110 pgL-1) followed by octachlorobornanes (76 pg L 1). 

Delavirdine has an oral bioavailability of about 85%, but this is reduced by antacids. It is extensively bound (about 98%) to plasma proteins. Cerebrospinal fluid levels average only 0.4% of the corresponding plasma concentrations, representing about 20% of the fraction not bound to plasma proteins. Caution should be used when administering delavirdine to patients with hepatic insufficiency because clinical experience in this situation is limited.

Aluminum levels can also vary with seasonal meteorological conditions. For example, in Mackinac Island, Michigan, summer levels averaged about 0.25 ng/m3, while winter levels were only about 0.18 ng/m3 (Rahn 1971).

Meat samples from wild harvested subadult and adult alligators in south Louisiana had low Hg levels, averaging 0.131 pg g-1 [32], The highest level detected (0.386 pg g-1) is much lower than the FDA action level for safe human consumption of fish flesh (Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, 1998). Samples of both sexes from southwest Louisiana were significantly higher (0.176 pg g-1) than those from southeast Louisiana (0.098 pg g 1). No difference was seen between males and females pooled from all sites. The average alligator meat Hg level in Louisiana (0.131 pgg-1) was lower than values reported in other southeastern states and presents no public health concern.
