Of the 22 pesticides analyzed in water, 21 were found to be present in some or all of the samples analyzed cyanazine was the only undetected compound. Figure 2 shows the concentration of individual and total pesticides and their frequency of detection in the water samples collected from each of the six sampling sites monitored. [Pg.264]

GC analyses of the pupal secretion of E. borealis have indicated the presence of vitamin E acetate and other tocopherol derivatives [49,50]. However, in tests with ants, these compounds proved to be essentially inactive, whereas the secretion itself was potently deterrent. To find and identify the active components in the pupal Epilachna borealis secretion, NMR spectroscopic studies on the fresh secretion were carried out. One and two-dimensional NMR experiments revealed that the tocopheryl acetates account for only a relatively small percentage of the beetles5 total secretion (20%), whereas the major components represented a group of previously undetected compounds. By analysis of the COSY, HSQC and HMBC spectra of the mixture, these components were shown to be esters and amides derived from three (co-l)-(2-hydroxyethylamino)alka-noic acids 44-46. HPLC analyses coupled to a mass spectrometric detector revealed that the secretion contain a highly diverse mixture of macrocyclic polyamines, the polyazamacrolides (PAMLs) 47-52 (Fig. 8). [Pg.190]

Data qualification consists of placing a data qualifier, also known as a data flag, next to the numerical value that is uncertain. Data qualifiers are usually the letters of the Latin alphabet. Water and carbon play critical roles in many of the Earth s chemical and physical cycles and yet their origin on the Earth is somewhat mysterious. Carbon and water could easily form solid compounds in the outer regions of the solar nebula, and accordingly the outer planets and many of their satellites contain abundant water and carbon. The type I carbonaceous chondrites, meteorites that presumably formed in the asteroid belt between the terrestrial and outer planets, contain up to 5% (m/m) carbon and up to 20% (m/m) water of hydration. It is fruitless to attempt detailed study of a phenomenon whose products are not well identified.
