Plasticiser/oil in rubber is usually determined by solvent extraction (ISO 1407) and FTIR identification [57] TGA can usually provide good quantifications of plasticiser contents. Antidegradants in rubber compounds may be determined by HS-GC-MS for volatile species (e.g. BHT, IPPD), but usually solvent extraction is required, followed by GC-MS, HPLC, UV or DP-MS analysis. Since cross-linked rubbers are insoluble, more complex extraction procedures must be carried out. The determination of antioxidants in rubbers by means of HPLC and TLC has been reviewed [58], The TLC technique for antidegradants in rubbers is described in ASTM D 3156 and ISO 4645.2 (1984). Direct probe EIMS was also used to analyse antioxidants (hindered phenols and aromatic amines) in rubber extracts [59]. ISO 11089 (1997) deals with the determination of /V-phenyl-/9-naphthylamine and poly-2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline (TMDQ) as well as other generic types of antiozonants such as IV-alkyl-AL-phenyl-p-phenylenediamines (e.g. IPPD and 6PPD) and A-aryl-AL-aryl-p-phenylenediamines (e.g. DPPD), by means of HPLC. [Pg.35]

Oxidation of julolidine with peroxyacetic acid (at pH 4.8) has been reported124 to give bis-9,9 -julolidyl (105) by oxidative coupling of the benzene ring. A similar oxidative dimer was formed125 when the isolable 4-bromomethylene compound, produced by bromination of 2,2,4-trimethyl- 1,2-dihydroquinoline in chloroform, was allowed to react with bromine in the same solvent. [Pg.30]

Dicyclopentadiene was used as another difunctional agent for the synthesis of an oligomeric AO from 4-methylphenol [120] (after tert-butylation, AO 99 was obtained) or diphenylamine [121]. Polymeric aromatic amines for application in rubber stabilization were obtained in the presence of acid catalysts from diphenylamine and l,4-bis(l-hydroxy-l-methylethyl)benzene or 1,4-diisopropylbenzene [122] or from iV,A -diphenyl-l,4-phenylenediamine and a,to-p-xylylenedi-chloride [123]. Polymerization of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline in the presence of protic or Lewis adds [1] is very important commerdally. Oligomeric product 100 is an effective AO and AF agent for rubbers. [Pg.95]

Also, antioxidants were found to decrease the aging rate of natural rubber. Among the antioxidants more frequently used are N-phenyl-p-naphthylamine, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methyl-1-hydroxybenzene (BHT), N-isopropyl-N -phenyl-p-phenylenediamine, N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N -p-phenylenediamine, and poly-(2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline). [Pg.211]
