Commerdal importance

In this Chapter we shall look at the use of micro-organisms to produce organic adds of commerdal importance. Although all of the examples to be mentioned are relatively simple chemically, they are interesting in that they are metabolically diverse. Some are genuine end products of metabolism, while others are compounds considered to be central metabolites in all living cells. These central metabolites are normally present in relatively small, constant amounts. However, some micro-organisms can be "persuaded" to produce enormous yields of these metabolites. [Pg.116]

Homopolysaccharides are synthesised by relatively few spedfic enzymes and are not constructed from subunits. The commerdally important homo polymer dextran is synthesised extracellularly by the enzyme dextransucrase. In Leuconostoc mesenteroides the enzyme is induced by the substrate sucrose. This is deaved to release free fructose and link the glucose to the redudng end of the acceptor dextran chain, which is bound to the enzyme. The product from this bacterium is composed almost exdusively of... [Pg.219]

A fifth, and commerdally important difference between CSTRs and batch reactors is heat removal. Heat generation in a batch polymerization can he highly nonunifonm. Sometimes the reactor productivity is dependent entirely on the capacity to remove heat during the peak reaction perind. Heat removal in steady-state, continuous systems is uniform and, for this among other reasons, higher productivity can often be achieved. [Pg.360]

The presence of ring molecrdes has to be taken into account in the manufacture of some commerdally-important polymers including linear poly(dimethylsiloxane), nylon-6 and poly(ethylene tere dithalate). Indeed much of the research carried out on cyclic concentrations in such polymers has been by woricers in Industry, who have been concerned to acquire detaited knowledge of the cydic contents of thdr products. [Pg.43]

Consideration should be given to monitor the incidence of resistance in the most commerdally important situations and gauge levels of control obtained... [Pg.769]

Although a large number of derivatives of vinylpyridine have been synthesized, only three monomers [(a), (b), and (c)] have become commerdally important [543-545] (Table 4). Polyvinylpyridines are of particular interest because they can act as polyelectrolytes, and furthermore, because they can form complexes at the basic nitrogen moiety. [Pg.138]

Several commerdally important vinyl copolymers are manufactured using suspension polymerization, induding polystyrene (general purpose, expandable and high impact), poly (methyl methacrylate), poly(vinyl acetate), styrene-acrylonitrile... [Pg.464]

The strains described in Table 9.4 are all of commerdal value since they produce compounds which are either pharmacologically active or can be converted to pharmacologically important compounds. For example, the production of 1,4-androstadiene-3,17-dione from (5-sitosterol provides material which can be readily converted to estrone, while 4-androstene-3,l 7-dione can be converted to testosterone. [Pg.308]

In common with many catalysed reactions, the important features of carbonylation process chemistry may be associated with different aspects of the catalytic cyde. Broadly, process activity may vary either because (i) more of the catalyst is present in the active form, (ii) the activity of the catalyst in the active form is enhanced or inhibited or, less commonly, (iii) the rate controlling step does not involve the catalyst. The process selectivity may vary because of side reactions (i) occurring through the active catalyst cycle, (ii) involving inactive catalyst, or (iii) taking place because of the organic chemistry of the systems. Examples of all these contributions to overall process effidency are found in the various commerdal carbonylation processes. [Pg.199]

Dicyclopentadiene was used as another difunctional agent for the synthesis of an oligomeric AO from 4-methylphenol [120] (after tert-butylation, AO 99 was obtained) or diphenylamine [121]. Polymeric aromatic amines for application in rubber stabilization were obtained in the presence of acid catalysts from diphenylamine and l,4-bis(l-hydroxy-l-methylethyl)benzene or 1,4-diisopropylbenzene [122] or from iV,A -diphenyl-l,4-phenylenediamine and a,to-p-xylylenedi-chloride [123]. Polymerization of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline in the presence of protic or Lewis adds [1] is very important commerdally. Oligomeric product 100 is an effective AO and AF agent for rubbers. [Pg.95]

A company engaged commerdally in the manufacture, import or sale of a product or packaging must ensure that end-of-life products or packaging are collected and reused or recycled. [Pg.395]

This builds on the key research carried out on titanium-doped mesoporous solids and their use in selective oxidations using hydrogen peroxide. Catechol and hydroquinone are now manufactured commerdally using the Enichem catalyst TS-1 (prepared from tetraethylorthosilicate and tetraethylorthotita-nate71) and hydrogen peroxide.72 Traditional methods of manufacture have low atom efficiency and the successful exploitation of new greener catalytic methods in such processes is very important.73,74... [Pg.75]
