Dioctyl maleate

Macroemulsion polymerization relies on the transport of monomer from the monomer droplets to the polymer particles. This transport is driven by the equilibrium swelling of the polymer particles. This presumes rapid (relative to the rate of polymerization) transport of monomer. For most monomers, this is a good assumption. However, for monomers that are very water insoluble (VEOVA [vinyl versatatex] or DOM [dioctyl maleate]), this may not be true. In making this determination, the following assumptions can be made ... [Pg.159]

Wu and Schork [152] compared batch and semibatch and mini- and macroemulsion polymerization for three monomer systems, VAc/BA, VAc/dioctyl maleate (DOM) and VAc/n-methylol acrylamide (NMA), with large differences in reactivity ratios and water solubilities. HD was used as the costabilizer. (It should be noted that DOM could function as a costabilizer itself, but for the sake of consistency, HD was added to the DOM polymerizations.) KPS and the... [Pg.200]

Poly[styrene-co-(2-hydroxy-4 -vinylbenzophenone)] was less efficient in PS than 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone [334]. Similarly, PE films doped with 4-dodecyloxy-2-hydroxybenzophenone (0.1 mol%) were more stable than PE doped with copolymers of ethylene with polymerisable benzophenones having a comparable content of chromophores [54]. The efficiency of a SAN type LS, a terpolymer of 2-hydroxy-4-(4-vinylbenzyloxy)benzophenone with acrylonitrile and styrene did not exceed that of conventional LS [84]. No efficiency loss of 2-hydroxy-4-methacryloyloxybenzophenone in ABS was observed after bonding into a terpolymer with styrene and acrylonitrile. The homopolymer was slightly inferior to both the monomer and terpolymer [84]. A better protection of PP was provided by poly[(2-hydroxy-3-allyl-4-methoxyphenylbenzophenone)-co-dibutyl maleate] than with 2-hydroxy-3-allyl-4-methoxybenzophenone [335] (stabilization tests were performed in the presence of phenolic antioxidants). A comparable or better light stabilizing efficiency of poly[vinyl acetate-co-(5-methylacryloyloxy salicylate)] or poly(2-allylphenyl salicylate-co-dioctyl maleate) than that of alkyl-phenyl salicylates was observed in polyolefins [335]. [Pg.154]

DOM. [Textile Rubber Chem.] Dioctyl maleate plasticizer ft vinyl resins, intermediate fin- mfg. at surfactants, in copolymeiization reactions with PVC ani vinyl acetates, latex paint formulations. [Pg.110]

Several patents have been issued covering the preparation of DSS (13, 14). The synthesis of dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate is generally accomplished by the treatment of maleic acid anhydride with 2 - ethylhexanol to produce dioctyl maleate which is then reacted with sodium bisulfite under conditions conducive to saturation of the olefinic bond, with simultaneous rearrangement of the bisulfite to the sulfonate structure (15). [Pg.212]

Zhang and Sun [211] used dioctyl maleate (DOM) as a compatibilizer in blends of PLA/starch. Using DOM as a compatibilizer markedly improved the tensile strength of the blend, even at low concentrations (below 5 %). When DOM functioned as a plasticizer at concentrations over 5 %, significant enhancement in elongation was observed. Compatibilization and plasticization took place simultaneously, which was indicated by the mechanical properties and thermal behaviour of the blends. With DOM as a polymeric plasticizer, thermal loss in the blends was not significant. Water absorption of PLA/starch blends increased with DOM concentration, whereas DOM leaching in an aqueous environment was inhibited. [Pg.138]
