A well known example of capillary-buoyancy equilibrium is the experiment in which a number of glass tubes of varying diameter are placed into a tray of water. The water level rises up the tubes, reaching its highest point in the narrowest of the tubes. The same observation would be made if the fluids in the system were oil and water rather than air and water. [Pg.120]

Types of air strippers include packed towers, tray towers, and spray towers. The designer usually wants to specify stream flow rates or parameters in the process, but these may not be directly accessible. For example, the desired separation may be known for a distiUation tower, but the simulation program requires the specification of the number of trays. It is left up to the designer to choose the number of trays that lead to the desired separation. Example 8 Calculation of Rate-Based Distillation The separation of 655 lb mol/h of a bubble-point mixture of 16 mol % toluene, 9.5 mol % methanol, 53.3 mol % styrene, and 21.2 mol % ethylbenzene is to be earned out in a 9.84-ft diameter sieve-tray column having 40 sieve trays with 2-inch high weirs and on 24-inch tray spacing. The column is equipped with a total condenser and a partial reboiler. The feed wiU enter the column on the 21st tray from the top, where the column pressure will be 93 kPa, The bottom-tray pressure is 101 kPa and the top-tray pressure is 86 kPa. The distillate rate wiU be set at 167 lb mol/h in an attempt to obtain a sharp separation between toluene-methanol, which will tend to accumulate in the distillate, and styrene and ethylbenzene. A reflux ratio of 4.8 wiU be used. Plug flow of vapor and complete mixing of liquid wiU be assumed on each tray. K values will be computed from the UNIFAC activity-coefficient method and the Chan-Fair correlation will be used to estimate mass-transfer coefficients. Predict, with a rate-based model, the separation that will be achieved and back-calciilate from the computed tray compositions, the component vapor-phase Miirphree-tray efficiencies. [Pg.1292]

As shown in Fig. 13-92, methods of providing column reflux include (a) conventional top-tray reflux, (b) pump-back reflux from side-cut strippers, and (c) pump-around reflux. The latter two methods essentially function as intercondenser schemes that reduce the top-tray-refliix requirement. As shown in Fig. 13-93 for the example being considered, the internal-reflux flow rate decreases rapidly from the top tray to the feed-flash zone for case a. The other two cases, particularly case c, result in better balancing of the column-refliix traffic. Because of this and the opportunity provided to recover energy at a moderate- to high-temperature level, pump-around reflirx is the most commonly used technique. However, not indicated in Fig. 13-93 is the fact that in cases h and c the smaller quantity of reflux present in the upper portion of the column increases the tray requirements. Furthermore, the pump-around circuits, which extend over three trays each, are believed to be equivalent for mass-transfer purposes to only one tray each. Bepresentative tray requirements for the three cases are included in Fig. 13-92. In case c heat-transfer rates associated with the two pump-around circuits account for approximately 40 percent of the total heat removed in the overhead condenser and from the two pump-around circuits combined. [Pg.1330]

Open-loop behavior of multicomponent distillation may be studied by solving modifications of the multicomponent equations of Distefano [Am. Inst. Chem. Eng. J., 14, 190 (1968)] as presented in the subsection Batch Distillation. The second classification is the physical model. Examples are the rigorous modiiles found in chemical-process simulators. In sequential modular simulators, distillation and kinetic reactors are two important examples. Compared to relational models, physical models purport to represent the ac tual material, energy, equilibrium, and rate processes present in the unit. They rarely, however, include any equipment constraints as part of the model. Despite their complexity, adjustable parameters oearing some relation to theoiy (e.g., tray efficiency) are required such that the output is properly related to the input and specifications. These modds provide more accurate predictions of output based on input and specifications. However, the interactions between the model parameters and database parameters compromise the relationships between input and output. The nonlinearities of equipment performance are not included and, consequently, significant extrapolations result in large errors. Despite their greater complexity, they should be considered to be approximate as well. [Pg.2555]

Analysts must recognize the above sensitivity when identifying which measurements are required. For example, atypical use of plant data is to estimate the tray efficiency or HTU of a distillation tower. Certain tray compositions are more important than others in providing an estimate of the efficiency. Unfortunately, sensor placement or sample port location are usually not optimal and, consequently, available measurements are, all too often, of less than optimal use. Uncertainty in the resultant model is not minimized. [Pg.2560]

Static sampling systems are defined as those that do not have an active air-moving component, such as the pump, to pull a sample to the collection medium. This type of sampling system has been used for over 100 years. Examples include the lead peroxide candle used to detect the presence of SO2 in the atmosphere and the dust-fall bucket and trays or slides coated with a viscous material used to detect particulate matter. This type of system suffers from inability to quantify the amount of pollutant present over a short period of time, i.e., less than 1 week. The potentially desirable characteristics of a static sampling system have led to further developments in this type of technology to provide quantitative information on pollutant concentrations over a fked period of time. Static sampling systems have been developed for use in the occupational environment and are also used to measure the exposure levels in the general community, e.g., radon gas in residences. [Pg.189]

Effects. Trays can become damaged several ways. A pressure surge can cause damage. A slug of water entering a heavy hydrocarbon fractionator will produce copious amounts of vapor. The author is aware of one example where all the trays were blown out of a crude distillation column. If the bottom liquid level is allowed to reach the reboiler outlet line, the wave action can damage some bottom trays. [Pg.302]

Better examples of shortcut design methods developed from property data are fractionator tray efficiency, from viscosity " and the Clausius-Clapeyron equation which is useful for approximating vapor pressure at a given temperature if the vapor pressure at a different temperature is known. Tough transparent sheet may be produced by blending standard polystyrene with block copolymer in an extruder in the ratios 80 20 to 20 80, depending on the application of the products subsequently thermoformed from the sheet. Drying Rooms For drydng materials that cannot be agitated, the drying room, and tray drier (which there are many varieties) can be used. In the former, the material may be spread on pans and these stacked in a rack, which leaves a space between the trays for air circulation. The room has loosely fitted side walls of plaster board, or similar material, or even canvas, and contains a steam radiator. The natural circulation of the warm air removes the moisture the drying period is generally long, for example, one or two days. [Pg.140]

Tray, Truck, and Tunnel Driers In order to accelerate drying, the closet is factory-built with tight walls. It forms a box, and the air is passed by means of a fan over a radiator or over finned tubes and then over the trays. A portion of the air escapes at the discharge opening the remainder is reheated and recirculated. An amount of new air equivalent to the volume discharged is admitted at the fan. Secondary heating tubes are placed in the path of the air to restore their temperature and heat content. In the tray drier, shallow pans 2 ft by 3 ft by 2 in. deep, for example, are placed on a rack, forming part of the drier. In the truck drier, the rack is on wheels, and the whole may be wheeled in and out of the drier. There may be one or several trucks to each drier, and each truck may have twelve, sixteen or more levels for trays. [Pg.140]
