This volume covers ongoing research and, thus, leaves many questions unanswered and many problems unsolved. The geochemistry of disposed radioactive wastes involves many complex issues that will require years of additional research to resolve. High-priority problems include integration of geochemical data with computer models of chemical interaction and transport, definition of environmental conditions that affect the behavior of radionuclides at specific disposal sites, evaluation of complex formation of dissolved radionuclides with inorganic and organic complexants, and determination of radionuclide solubilities in natural waters. [Pg.7]

For the Berry phase, we shall quote a definition given in [164] ""The phase that can be acquired by a state moving adiabatically (slowly) around a closed path in the parameter space of the system. A fundamental difference exists between the assumptions of the homogeneous and porous membrane models. For the homogeneous models, it is assumed that the membrane is nonporous, that is, transport takes place between the interstitial spaces of the polymer chains or polymer nodules, usually by diffusion. For the porous models, it is assumed that transport takes place through pores that mn the length of the membrane barrier layer. As a result, transport can occur by both diffusion and convection through the pores. Whereas both conceptual models have had some success in predicting RO separations, the question of whether an RO membrane is truly homogeneous, ie, has no pores, or is porous, is still a point of debate. The lower volatihty of JP-8 is a significant factor in the U.S. Air Force conversion from JP-4, since fires and explosions under both combat and ordinary handling conditions have been attributed to the use of JP-4. In examining the safety aspects of fuel usage in aircraft, a definitive study (15) of the accident record of commercial and military jet transports concluded that kerosene-type fuel is safer than wide-cut fuel with respect to survival in crashes, in-flight fires, and ground fueling accidents. It is not appropriate to say that the reaction is diffusion controlled it depends on both the diffusion and the chemical kinetics. Time-Dependent Cascade Behavior. The period of time during which a cascade must be operated from start-up until the desired product material can be withdrawn is called the equiUbrium time of the cascade. The equiUbrium time of cascades utilizing processes having small values of a — 1 is a very important quantity. Often a cascade may prove to be quite impractical because of an excessively long equiUbrium time. It may be desirable to curtail transport of pollution to areas whose air is presently quite clean, even though, after such transport, the air quality of the area would be considerably cleaner than would be required by air quality standards.
