In summary, the amazing breadth and depth of research in carotenoids are reasons why it draws investigators are drawn to this fascinating field of research. The research spans the continuum, from detailed studies of the roles of photoprotective carotenoids in plants to the potential application in the prevention of disease in humans. This is translational research at its best and I commend the editor, Dr. John Landrum, for assembling such an interesting and informative collection of current research. 

Purpose The mission of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Office of Translational Research is to facilitate the pre-clinical discovery and development of new therapeutic interventions for neurological disorders. The Office supports pre-clinical projects from the discovery of candidate therapeutics through IND and Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) applications to the FDA. This is accomplished through both access to NINDS contract resources and direct funding mechanisms. 

The White House and Congress have heralded the fact that the NIH budget was doubled to 27.3 billion in the five-year period ending in fiscal 2003. Nevertheless, the benefits of basic and clinical research supported by the NIH will not be realized if there is little or no grant support for translational research. Neither the pharmaceutical industry nor health care practitioners are well positioned to perform this research. A national commitment to improving health outcomes cannot end at the clinical research phase. Substantial new resources must be committed to translational research.

The academic base in experimental medicine, in both training and scienhfic programs, must be rebuilt. Translational research, that is, specific product-related research, alone is not sufficient. A government-academic-industry consortium or multiple consortia may be one model to get some of this research started, but clinical pharmacology needs to be integrated as a key part of the multidisciplinary teams in each of these endeavors.
