Trading zones

Jack Products, a U.S. Class 1 railroad and North America s leading independent intermodal terminal operator, respectively, have invested 60 million for start-up expenses to revive and modernize the 143-year old first transcontinental railroad of the Americas. Fnlly operational in 2000, the revitalized railroad provides an efficient intermodal link for world commerce and complements the existing transportation provided by the canal, the Colon Free Trade Zone, and the port terminals.

Galison emphasizes that groups collaborating in a trading zone need not, and, in fact, often do not, lose their distinctness ... 

Indeed, Galison explains that In the trading zone both sides impose constraints on the nature of the exchange (806), and the collaboration itself can even reinforce the various subcultures involved (829). 

There are no shortages of suggestions for reform to consider in terms of restructuring the framework of the system while still preserving the basic incentives that drive it (Attaran 2004 Cychosz 2004). It might be more useful, however, to take a different world-view and conceive of the creation of a unique form of a complex adaptive system a "trading zone."... 

Moving toward an alternative world-view trading zones... 

In effect, TRIPs is an effort to establish the rules for a global trading zone around intellectual property. But the TRIPs rules create an unequal trading zone, where a large proportion of the global population in developing countries lack the resources to trade for technologies that are essential to their survival.

The concepts of quality management (QM) and QA in analytical laboratories were developed primarily to harmonize the world market and in connection with the globalization of the world s major trading zones they have now been formally established in relevant directives and standards—formerly ISO 25 and EN 45001, more recently ISO/IEC17025. The requirements of these standards have become widely accepted as market-regulating tools by both the chemical industry and independent laboratories for routine chemical analysis. At present they are extensively implemented in the form of accreditation, a universally accepted process by which an authoritative body at national or international level gives formal recognition that a laboratory or a person is competent to carry out specific tasks.

Supply Chain Needs 1467 3.4. Free Trade Zones 1489... 

One of the considerations in selecting a site is whether or not the site is in a free trade zone (FTZ) and whether or not the FIZ meets the company s needs. FTZs are secured areas within the United States but they are legally considered outside the company s territory. The purpose is to attract and promote international trade and commerce. Foreign and domestic goods may be stored, manufactured, and processed duty-free in the FTZ, which is typically a fenced-in area with warehouse facilities and industrial park space and access to aU modes of transportation. Subzones, which fall beyond the perimeter of the public zone, are set up to accommodate industries that satisfy spedflc government criteria (e.g. abihty to generate public benefit through employment). 

Customs duty tmd internal revenue tax, if applicable, are paid only when merchandise is transferred from a foreign trade zone to a custom territory for consumption.
