Blueprints are based on a photochemical reaction. The paper is treated with a solution of iron(III) ammonium citrate and potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) and dried in the dark. When a tracing-paper drawing is placed on the blueprint paper and exposed to light, Fe ions are reduced to Fe ions, which react with hexa-cyanoferrate(III) ions in the moist paper to form the blue color on the paper. Recording of the ECG has several standard features. The paper is divided into squares of 1 mm each 10 mm (10 small boxes) is equivalent to 1 mV. Paper speed is 25 mm/s. Each small box on the tracing paper equals 0.04 second (40 ms), and each big box is 0.2 second. If there is one QRS complex per six big boxes (6 x 0.20 second), the patient has a heart rate of 50 beats per minute, whereas one QRS per big box indicates a heart rate of 300 beats per minute.

Even today, thin-layer chromatograms are often drawn or traced on tracing paper, and the zones are then colored with colored pencils (Fig. 99). These methods are time consuming, and the fine color nuances can seldom be accurately represented. Nevertheless, these methods of documentation are perfectly acceptable for legal purposes [125]. 

This more compact sheet leads to lower porosities and reduced opacity. The ultimate version of this is natural tracing paper, where the chanical pulp is so heavily beaten, that the sheet becomes virtually transparent. This also has the effect of imparting a high level of dry strength to the sheet. 

When manually drawing or drafting a pattern, the primary substrate used as the basis for pattern construction is commonly brown or white wide width craft paper (80—120 g/m ).
