Tests were done on real data containing approx. 32(XX) nontrivial images. Of these approx. 25% were classified by the rule-based system and another 25% by the CBR system. The reliability was high - of 330 defects present in the data only two were classified as non-defects. We are currently working on further improving the recognition ratio and increasing the speed of the system. 

The mathematical form of the PEF is in almost every case a compromise between speed and accuracy. As computer power continually increases, ideally following Moore s Law, and the cost/performance ratio is getting better, one might think that there is no longer a need to sacrifice accuracy to save computational time. This is not really true, because in direct proportion to the CPU speed is the rise in the scientists interest in calculating larger and larger molecules (in fact, their interest always rises faster than the CPU speed). 

Nitric acid being the solvent, terms involving its concentration cannot enter the rate equation. This form of the rate equation is consistent with reaction via molecular nitric acid, or any species whose concentration throughout the reaction bears a constant ratio to the stoichiometric concentration of nitric acid. In the latter case the nitrating agent may account for any fraction of the total concentration of acid, provided that it is formed quickly relative to the speed of nitration. More detailed information about the mechanism was obtained from the effects of certain added species on the rate of reaction. 

Pulses of ions can be directed into the TOF analyzer at the rate of about 30 kHz, and, therefore, more than 30,000 spectra per second can be collected and summed. There are significant improvements in signal-to-noise ratios and speed of acquisition of data.
