Timbers stored

Breaches in the wrapping material may allow colonisation by wood-boring insects. A survey of 1,568 Mary Rose timbers stored in polyethylene bags revealed the presence of wharf-borer beetle larvae in 2% of these timbers. Attack by this insect is not always apparent from examination of the timber... 

The biomass in (for example) a forest can be harvested and the sequestered carbon can either be used for energy production (with rapid return of the carbon to the atmosphere) or it can be stored for longer periods in timber products. The example given in Figure 1.4 shows a forest that is clear-felled after 100 years of growth. 

If the forest resource is properly managed, then timber can be harvested indefinitely. The use of timber in products represents a means by which atmospheric carbon can be stored in materials pools. 

Extending the life of timber products will result in carbon being stored in a materials pool for longer periods.

If the timber is prone to degrade due to too rapid drying the thickness of the stickers can be redueed, to say 15 mm, to reduce the airflow through the stack. Stacks can be moved eloser together and stored at the leeward side of the yard. To further inhibit airflow, staeks ean be eovered with horticultural shade-cloth (50% open mesh), but the boards will need to have had an anti-sapstain treatment. 

Despite the large number of wood-decay fungi growing on the surface of stored timbers, few signs of recent attack were observed. Soft rot cavities were observed but were not numerous. Such decay patterns were only observed... 

One of the most important of these fungi is that which causes dry-rot in stored logs or lumber and in timber in structures. The term dry-rot is loosely applied to cover almost any type of decay, but it is correctly applicable only to the work of the diy-rot fungus (Merulius lacrymans (Wulf.) Fr.). This decay is more common on coniferous woods than on hardwoods. The incipient decay appears aB a yellow-brown discoloration not easy to detect. Wood with typical decay is yellow to brown in color, much shrunken and cracked, and is so badly disintegrated that it can easily be crushed to a powder. Both sapwood and heartwood are attacked.

The powerful industries of fuel and energy, mining and smelting, as well as timber industry complexes are situated in the Russian North and Siberia Regions. Many of them use obsolete technologies, which are not consistent with modern environmental demands. For these reasons the pollution of soil, water and air is characteristic for huge territories, not to mention ample solid wastes that are usually stored in piles.
