Mr. Toscano provides some 1995 relative risk fatality statistics which compare several industries relative risk with the occupations described above in his Dangerous Jobs article. These numbers are specific to 1995 and involve fatalities, not major injuries. On a typical day about 17 workers in the United States are killed on the job. Thank goodness that job-related fatalities are relatively infrequent for specific standard industry classifications (SIC code), but a large incident in any industry may skew the information from year to year. 

Mr. Toscanos method of relative risk fatality statistics was applied to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data (2001). Note that fishers, timber cutters, and airline pilots were the riskiest jobs in 1995 and the most deadly in 2001. The data also show that the rate of accidental deaths (2001) in a chemical plant is lower than that of working in a grocery store. [34]...

Once the performance of the coastal engineering industry has been benchmarked, the project objectives can be measured through the HSE tracking accident and fatality statistics in the coastal engineering sector in future years to assess how the safety record improves. 

This compares with the United States where in 1990/1 the Bureau of Labor fatality statistics reveal that Transportation and public utilities have 8.4 fatalities per 100,000 employees. This makes it the third highest category behind the construction industry (with a rate of 16.7) and agriculture, forestry, and fishing (with a rate of 10) (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1993 47).

Of particular usefulness for safety and health professionals are the standards, field manual, and statistics. Each and every standard in general industry as well as construction can be easily located on the site or through a search. The interpretations for each of these standards are also easily searched by switching to the interpretation search database. The website also contains different statistical databases, including the Bureau of Labor statistics, and the most current injury and fatality statistics. 

This chapter is in two parts. The first presents some helicopter accident and fatality statistics to provide a comparison with other activities. The second is an example of a quantified risk assessment, which required an input from the foregoing statistics. 

Noncoal mining fatality records have been historically less certain than those for coal, especially prior to 1958 when the Department of the Interior first required all metal and nonmetal mine operators to report fatahties (House of Representatives Report No. 95-312 1977). After the establishment of the Bureau of Mines, fatality statistics certainly became more rehable in coal mining. Table 1.2 gives documented deaths for coal and noncoal mining in 5-year increments beginning with 1911.
