Active agents vary according to use. For controlling bad breath, 2iac salts, sodium lauryl sulfate, and flavors are used. To destroy oral microorganisms, chlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride [123-03-5] and ben2alkonium chloride [68391-01-5] are valuable. Essential oils, such as thymol [89-83-8] eucalyptol [470-82-6] menthol, and methyl salicylate [119-36-8] reduce plaque-related gingivitis (see Oils, essential). Sodium fluoride aids ia caries coatrol. [Pg.503]

Hydroxylamine Hydrochloride Solution Dissolve 20 g of hydroxylamine hydrochloride in sufficient water to make about 65 mL, transfer the solution into a separator, add a few drops of thymol blue TS, then add ammonium hydroxide until the solution assumes a yellow color. Add 10 mL of a 1 25 solution of sodium diethyldithiocarbamate, mix, and allow to stand for 5 min. Extract the solution with successive 10- to 15-mL portions of chloroform until a 5-mL test portion of the chloroform extract does not assume a yellow color when shaken with cupric sulfate TS. Add 2.7 N hydrochloric acid until the extracted solution is pink, adding 1 or 2 drops more of thymol blue TS if necessary, then dilute to 100 mL with water, and mix. [Pg.867]

Thymol is incompatible with iodine, alkalis, and oxidizing agents. It liquefies, or forms soft masses, on trituration with acetanilide, antipyrine, camphor, monobromated camphor, chloral hydrate, menthol, phenol, or quinine sulfate. [Pg.781]

Figure 9.12), In human blood and urine samples, only thymol and its conjugates, thymol glucuro-nide and sulfate, could be identi ed (Meesters et ah, 2009). [Pg.262]

Phenols can also be alkylated with olefins. The alkylation of m-cresol with propylene to produce thymol (2-isopropyl —5-methylphenol) was studied with metal sulfates and alumina as catalysts.A 90% selectivity to thymol was obtained at the phenol conversion of 63% from a 1 1 mixture of phenol and propylene at 673 K. [Pg.232]
