Combustible when exposed to heat or flame can react with oxidizing materials. To fight fire, use water, CO2, dry chemical. Potentially explosive reaction with concentrated nitric acid. Incompatible with acetanilide, alkalies, ferric salts, spirit nitrous ether, urethan. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.

USE For preparing spirit nitrous ether by mixing with 21 parts alcohol by weight. Caution May cause methemoglobinemia and hypotension and, in high conens, narcosis. 

Brown or greenish-brown, irregular lumps, mp 85-90. In sol in water. Freely so] in alcohol, chloroform, ether, creosote, soln of chloral hydrate, alkalies slightly sol in benzene, carbon disulfide. One gram dissolves In 1310 ml cold water, 82 ml boiling water 15 ml cold alcohol, 2.8 m] boiling alcohol 14 ml chloroform, 90 ml ether sol in glycerol. Gives a pasty mass with phenol, chloral hydrate or pyrocatecho], strong acids or alkalies, salicylic acid, oxidizers, iodine, spirit nitrous ether. LDjq orally in rats 1.65 g/kg (Boyd). 

White, needle-like crystals sweetish taste. Becomes pink on exposure to tight and air, or by contact with iron, d 1.272. mp 109-111. bp 280°, but volatilizes at lower temp and is slightly volatile with steam. One gram dissolves in 0.9 ml water, 0.2 ml water at 80°, 0.9 ml alcohol freely sol in ether, glycerol slightly sol in chloroform. pH 5.2. Protect from light. Incompat. Acetanilide, albumin, alkalies, antipy -line, camphor, ferric salts, menthol, spirit nitrous ether, nrethan. 

Salicylic acid or its salts are colored reddish even by merest traces of ferric salts. Incompaf Iron salts, spirit nitrous ether, lead acetate, iodine.
