Figure 17.6 shows the results for a typical composite image of the entire flame in which the image intensity, or gray scale value, is plotted on the vertical axis against radial and axial distance coordinates. To find the flame area, a threshold intensity is first picked and a binary image is created with all pixels with intensities above the threshold set to 1 (white) and the rest set to 0 (black). The number of white pixels is then proportional to the surface area of the flame at that intensity contour. This process is then repeated to build up a plot of flame area versus a normalized threshold number (intensity value/256) such as that shown in Fig. 17.7a. [Pg.278]

The measurements were performed on three detectors. Two detectors, a Ge(Li) and a p-type, were connected to PGT 386 amplifiers. The dependence of the correction factor on the total count rate in the spectrum in the measurements with the p-type detector is presented in Figs. 3 and 4. Figure 3 shows a comparison of the dependences measured with the 241Am source for measurements with the base-line restorer threshold set to AUTO and VAR. The two-photon decay of 2S /2 produces a continuous spectrum peaked near 250 eV. Sensitivity to the high energy part of this spectrum is suppressed in our detector by the K-absorbtion edge of carbon in the polypropylene window, while the lower part is discriminated electronically by a suitable threshold setting. In this example, an autoprep that uses the UV response to trigger fraction collection (dependent on the time window setting) may collect up to six separate fractions depending on the threshold setting.
