The Three Corpses and the Nine Worms are freqnently mentioned in Daoist texts as representations of the agents that cause death. The last sentence translated above also is not fonnd in the Liquid Pearl, which instead explicates the relation between mercnry, worms, and carp gall, saying Worms and the fish gall are Essences of Yin, and mercury is the Essence of Yang. Therefore Yin can control zhi) Yang, and thus the Medicine becomes fixed (fu) and does not dare to escape. The Perfected, the Divine Men, and the immortals keep this method secret, and it cannot be transmitted (1.12a). [Pg.177]

There are two main processes for the synthesis of ethyl alcohol from ethylene. The eadiest to be developed (in 1930 by Union Carbide Corp.) was the indirect hydration process, variously called the strong sulfuric acid—ethylene process, the ethyl sulfate process, the esterification—hydrolysis process, or the sulfation—hydrolysis process. This process is stiU in use in Russia. This section deals with the procedure used by American Polymer Standards Corp. in the manufacture of GPC/SEC gels. The reaction is performed in a three-neck flask equipped with a reflux condenser, a mechanical stirrer, and a thermometer. First, prepare the water phase and then the organic phase. After mixing the organic phase into the water phase, stir at 300 to 400 rpm for 2 hr at 40°C. Heat to 70°C and continue mixing at 150 rpm for 10 hr. The products were separated into different fractions (rewax, wax, oil, and aqueous) for quantification by GC analysis.
